Grito de Dolores, also known as Cry of Dolores, is known as the call to action by the priest Miguel Hidalgo. Specifically before the Mexican-American War occurred, but it was the spark to it. The context of the Cry of Dolores is that Mexico wanted to be its own country, free from Spain's reign.

Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. After 11 years of fighting with Spain, Mexico gained independence after Spain signed the Treaty of Cordoba which recognized Mexico as its independent country.

-Washington on the Brazos

Texas declared independence from Mexico's rule while a revolution against their government that began in October 1835. At first it was called the Republic of Texas and then Texas after nine years.

-San Antonio, Texas

On this date, President James K. Polk signed the annexation bill for Texas and it was an official recognization of Texas as the 28th part of the states. It was likely motivated by the fear that Mexico may try to take Texas to expand their territory.

The Mexican-American War took place primarily in Mexico and the Second Federal Republic of Mexico, the conflict was over land. Mexico didn't recognize Texas as an American territory and as a result, the United States antagonized Mexico in this dispute over the Nueces strip.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo helped mark an end to the Mexican-American War and the States and Mexico both signed, which created peace between the two countries.
