He admires her intellect and how she is the most trustworthy person he knows. She symbolizes honesty and innocence of childhood, which all Holden truly respects. Phoebe anchors Holden and offers him a safe place exempt from embarrassment and phony people.
- Holden also had a younger brother named Allie, who died prior to the novel setting. Allie’s death plays a major role in the path that Holden chose because Allie was connected with all that was juvenile and innocent also, leading Holden to believe that he should be a “catcher in the rye” to save the young and innocent that are in danger, like his brother Allie. 
- D.B. is Holden's older brother who is a "prostitute to Hollywood." Holden’s character is jaded and cynical against the “phony” world, but his family allows Holden to feel a sense of security and acceptance.
