In Catcher in the Rye, Holden’s family plays a major role in shaping who he is and the events that take place in the novel. After experiencing the death of his younger brother, Allie, Holden spirals in and out of depression while trying to navigate through the “phony” world he lives in. His grief over the loss of his brother coupled with his admiration for his younger sister, Phoebe, Holden’s family is what ultimately leads him to become the “catcher in the rye.”

He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent. He was terrifically intelligent. His teachers were always writing letters to my mother, telling her what a pleasure it was having a boy like Allie in their class. And they weren't just shooting the crap. They really meant it. But it wasn't just that he was the most intelligent member in the family. He was also the nicest, in lots of ways.” (page 38)

Salinger used this topic because it credits Holden as a more reliable narrator than what he makes himself to be. Although Holden, ironically, lies a majority of the time to strangers he meets in New York, the reader is able to see an authentic version of him when he reminiscing about his family. This topic is universal and relatable to most which evokes more emotion from the reader.

- Phoebe is Holden’s younger sister and is someone that, in a way, he looks up to. He admires her intellect and how she is the most trustworthy person he knows. She symbolizes honesty and innocence of childhood, which all Holden truly respects. Phoebe anchors Holden and offers him a safe place exempt from embarrassment and phony people.
- Holden also had a younger brother named Allie, who died prior to the novel setting. Allie’s death plays a major role in the path that Holden chose because Allie was connected with all that was juvenile and innocent also, leading Holden to believe that he should be a “catcher in the rye” to save the young and innocent that are in danger, like his brother Allie.
- D.B. is Holden's older brother who is a "prostitute to Hollywood." Holden tells his audience that he doesn't agree with his brother's choices, but he does still look up to him and strives to have the freedom that D.B. does.

J.D. Salinger formed the novel around Holden’s longing for his family to carry out the theme of protecting the juvenile and innocent, hence the title Catcher in the Rye. This topic highlights the major theme and provides more insight to the true meaning of the work as a whole. Holden’s character is jaded and cynical against the “phony” world, but his family allows Holden to feel a sense of security and acceptance.
