In chapter one of To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout is describing Boo Radley and the town of Maycomb's views on him: "Inside the house lived a malevolent phantom. People said he existed, but Jem and I had never seen him. People said he went out at night when the moon was down, and peeped in windows. When people's azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them. Any stealthy small crimes committed in Maycomb were his work. Once the town was terrorized by a series of morbid nocturnal events: people's chickens and household pets were found mutilated; although the culprit was Crazy Addie, who eventually drowned himself in Barker's Eddy, people still looked at the Radley Place, unwilling to discard their initial suspicions"(Lee 9). This quote shows the reader just how bad everyone in maycomb thinks Boo Radley is, and how scared of him they are. The whole town has their opinions on Boo and what he's like although no one has seen him in years, and they are unwilling to change their minds.

At the beginning of chapter 23, Jem and Atticus are discussing Tom Robinson's case, who is a black man accused of raping a white girl, after the jury gave him a death sentence:”“Tom’s jury sho‘ made up its mind in a hurry,” Jem muttered.Atticus’s fingers went to his watchpocket. “No it didn’t,” he said, more to himself than to us. “That was the one thing that made me think, well, this may be the shadow of a beginning. That jury took a few hours. An inevitable verdict, maybe, but usually it takes ‘em just a few minutes. This time—"(Lee 253). The jury was quick to give Tom the a death sentence, but not as quick as Atticus would have thought. This shows that even though the town of Maycomb is prodomitally racist, there are a select few that show potential for change in their thoughts towards black people.

Towards the beginning of chapter 26, Scout is feeling remorse for the way she thought about Boo Radley in that past and is imagining what it would be like if she met him now: "Maybe someday we would see him. I imagined how it would be: when it happened, he’d just be sitting in the swing when I came along. “Hidy do, Mr. Arthur,” I would say, as if I had said it every afternoon of my life. “Evening, Jean Louise,” he would say, as if he had said it every afternoon of my life, “right pretty spell we’re having, isn’t it?” “Yes sir, right pretty,” I would say, and go on"(Lee 278). Scout feels sorry for ever bothering Boo and has now changed her views on what he's like, from a scary stalker, to just a pleasant man who likes to stay inside. This shows us how Scouts prejudice has evolved and faded away on the topic of Boo Radley, and how there has been a big change in Maycomb and that there is still yet big change to come.
