The Passchendaele was the third battle around Ieper in Belgium were two Anzac divisions were involved. The aim of this attack was to break through the German lines towards the North Sea Ports. In July 1917, the Germans had the advantage of higher ground and a wide view of their attackers'. Allied troops made ten attempts to break through the Passchendaele. General Haig insisted that the attack proceed, but when his chief of staff visited the battlefield it brought tears to his eyes. Overall, the Allied force suffered 300 000 casualties; 38 000 were Australian.

The Battle Of Fromelles was a failed attempt for the British and Australian troops to outsmart the Germans. The Germans were well prepared as they new the attack was coming due to little signals accidentally sent by Britain and Australia. This specific battle began on the 19th - 20th July 1916. Their goal was to divert German attention from the main action. This caused 5333 casualties.

Fromelles
Australian soldiers first battle on the Western Front was known as the ill-fated Battle of Fromelles on 19-20 July. Their main goal was to divert German’s attention from the main action to the south and prevent them sending reinforcements there. However , this was a failure as the planning was rushed, the soldiers lacked experience and the distance across no-man’s land was as much as 400 metres. The germans were also advantaged as they were on a higher ground and and had machine gunners were well ready when Australian began and British began their attack. By the early hours of 20 July, the fifth Australian Division had 5533 casualties and one of the greatest losses of Australian lives within 24 hour period.

The battle of Passchendaele also known as the third battle of Ypres began in late 1917. This is where two groups of Anzacs fought to attempt to break down the German lines towards the North Sea ports. Throughout the month of June there were 7000 Australian casualties during the first stage of the fight. The British believed they would take down the Germans but the Germans had an advantage because they had higher ground and a wider view on the movements from the Anzacs. Throughout the fourteen weeks the battle took place the troops made ten attempts to break through to Passchendaele. However due to heavy rain, men and and equipment became bogged and stuck in the mud and the flooded fields. Despite this General Haig insisted that this attack would continue on. General Haig’s chief visited the battlefield and was reportedly overwhelmed when he found out that they lost over 300 000 men and out of that 300 000, 38 000 were Australian.

From the late 1917, two ANZAC divisions took part in fighting in leper which is in Belgium. This was known as the Passchendaele. The British used this method against the germans and try and break through the germans lines towards the north sea port , where the germans had there boats. There were 7000 Australian casualties during the attack in June. In July 1917. the British resumed artillery shelling of german fences. The germans had a higher advantage of higher ground and view of their attacks. In conclusion this method didn't really work because the germans were more prepared, they were higher up and which they could see there enemies which was the British.
