Juan Ponce de Leon went with Columbus when he made the second voyage to the Americas in 1493.When Ponce de Leon arrived in the New World he settled on a Caribbean Island named Hispaniola. There he became an military commander under the governor. in 1509 Juan explored an island named Borinquen , now known as Puerto Rico. Ponce de Leon led soldiers to conquer the Island. Spain's King Ferdinand made him governor of the island. He named the land of Florida and claimed it for Spain. He sailed up and down but did not find the fountain of youth, so he went back to Puerto Rico. In 1521, he returned to Florida to start a settlement. He brought 200 men as well as horses, cattle, and seeds to plant. The American Indians there the invasion. They attacked and arrow struck Ponce de Leon. Wounded, he sailed back to Cuba and soon died. Ponce de Leon died when he was 47 years old. He died in 1521.
