We would be doing our students a disservice if we didn't offer opportunities to explore and become inquisitive. A good balance of "traditional teaching" and skills learned in Makerspace will connect the information they are learning on a whole new level that may be more meaningful than just regurgitating information for tests. I have seen projects my own child is doing in college and the level they are expected to present at is not something she was prepared for by just turning in a Powerpoint or GoogleSlide. I see that Makerspace would have really made a difference.

If we are truly inspiring and equipping our students with innovative and challenging opportunities, then we are no longer standing in front of the typical classroom and lecturing. Those experiences come from opportunities like those in a makerspace. A place where the student has a safe environment to take chances and fail.

Also, one of our beliefs is that all WISD students will be relentless, self directed learners. In order for that to happen, we have to step back and give them the opportunities to explore, face challenges and try new things.

In order to have some more background I researched some uses of makerspace for middle school history. An idea was using 3D printing to create replicas of Indian dwellings, make game pieces for a game on the American Revolution, etc. It also said it helped with geographic features. It would be interesting to see if they could create a lock in a canal or design an invention during the industrial revolution. This would be a hands on activity that required a high level of thinking and risk-taking. It would encourage collaboration and create much more interest in students who do not like the language heavy nature of a history course.

Students need the chance to have an idea and try it out. We don't have opportunities in our curriculum, as it is currently structured, for that to take place. I would like to expose them to a problem and have them come up with a solution, but then have to implement it in some way. Teaching a tested subject with tons of teks will add a challenge to finding a way to incorporate this, mainly because we are so pressed for time. It will have to be very purposeful and cover a lot of tested concepts. I wish we had more room in our curriculum for them to experiment with issues/concepts that they just find interesting...but I just don't see it happening.
