SO, i think that the main focus is the window, its is like a border zone for the outside, and inside. There's a big contrasting different from the outside, which is extensive and vast, as compared to the inside, which is cramped and messy. We can also see it as messy on the inside, and calm on the outside. The name of the artwork is 'a view from an apartment', so i also feel that the window is the key focus. Hence, the window should be the focus.

Intentions:

What the work is, state for both (still life, object study, landscape, self portrait, portrait)

What is the intention (eg. To create abstract art pieces to convey feelings, etc)

Kandinsky’s work is abstract art and Affandi’s work is a self portrait

Affandi’s intention is to depict a self portrait in different emotions

Use of green: Help to create depth and contrast to the brighter colours, like a background

Affandi: why there is more yellow than the other colours? 

Affandi: Formalistic - More dynamic, spontaneous, will just paint as he goes along

Kandinsky: Formalistic: Plans how he wants to create the work and how it looks. 

Kandinsky’s colours used: Maybe to show his knowledge of colour theory, he was a professor in colour theory

How they used paint, how they made colours:

Affandi: He would squeeze paint from the tube directly on the canvas, raw colours

Kandinsky: He would mix his colours

Kandinsky: He had a condition where he would represent music into his artworks

How emotion is conveyed:

Affandi: He used colours literally, eg red for anger, yellow for joy

Kandinsky: He used shapes and brush strokes to convey emotions

Kandinsky uses different geometric and organic shapes for different sizes and proportions.

He overlaps them and he arranges them in a somewhat circular direction to create rhythm, this is also expressed in his title ‘Dominant Curve’ 

Affandi’s brush strokes are very spontaneous and emotional , whereas if I saw Kandinsky’s work i would see it as more calmer and controlled. Kandinsky’s work conveys a certain sense of space from the overlapping colours and use of tones. He used darker colours as a background while the brighter colours are more up front. (Victoria’s space) 

Why did Affandi want to make the self portrait: He sees his portraits as a way of reflection
