The album After Laughter has a very personal meaning to me because I feel as if the band was speaking to me personally. This album helped me realize things I have never even thought of.
One of the tracks that stood out to me the most was the “Fake Happy”. This song has a poppy, upbeat tune, but the lyrics portray otherwise. The song starts with the words, “I love making you believe, what you get is what you see, but I’m so fake happy, I feel so fake happy. And I bet everybody here, is just as insincere. We’re all so fake happy. And I know fake happy.” The lyrics tell a story of not being truly happy and just putting on a persona of being okay. The song does not really exaggerate the “sadness” aspect, but it brings the idea up. Williams acknowledges that she puts on a mask for others, so they won’t worry about her. Along with calling herself out on this, Williams also calls others out. She wants people to know that everyone is “fake happy” at some point and that it is not an unusual thing. Another song that really spoke to me in this album, was the song “26”. This song represents what it means to be a dreamer, and to have hope. Williams sings about “hold(ing) onto hope if you got it”. I feel these lyrics came from Williams realizing that it is okay to be dreamer and to always remember that, because she herself had forgotten. In the song “Brick by Boring Brick” off of the 2007 “Riot!” album, Williams once sang “Keep your feet on the ground, When your heads in the clouds”. Meaning keep an eye on reality, don’t let your dreams cloud your vision of what is real. Now, ten years later in the 2017 album, Williams states, “After all wasn’t I the one who said, to keep your feet on the ground? Man, you really brought me back down.” This development of character and maturity can be heard in the lyrics. Williams wants listeners to realize just as she did, that she is not the same person that she was years ago. Williams wants listeners to be able to accept who they once were and come to terms with growing, and that it is okay. I feel as if she used the musical element of “closeness” in this song to show that she connected with her past self. She noticed she was once wrong, but she does not want others to realize the mistake later, just as she did. Williams also states, “Reality will break your heart, Survival will not be the hardest part, it’s keeping all your hopes alive, when all the rest of you has died, So let it break your heart.” I feel as if Williams wants listeners to know that reality will be hard, and it will break you, but as long as you have hope, and keep dreaming you will be okay.
