Since taking this class I've learned that it is just as important to not make such a big deal about things like multicultural crayons and posters, because they should just be normalized and fit seamlessly into the classroom. Materials, posters, class library, etc. should all reflect your students along with their interests, which will naturally create the classroom aesthetic. Teachers that encourage their students to shame and embarrass the one student has detrimental effects on the child. It creates an unhealthy classroom environment in which students are scared of messing up or failing in front of their peers. Children must fail together to also learn together. Putting children in timeout or removing them from the rest of students not only takes away from their instructional time, but also creates feelings of shame and embarrassment. No feelings like that should be associated with a classroom. We must be more keen on how to address such situations and listen to what the child really needs. In my observation I have witnessed teachers take no time to recover children that are having an emotional moment. There would be no effort to comfort the crying child. When a was child struggling to do a task, the teacher did not speak words of affirmation and life into the child, they did the opposite, rushing the child and acting as if the child was incompetent or a burden. It is important for the child's development and exploration, and important for the teacher so that they can gauge the learning that is taking place. In addition, giving children ample play time outside is necessary for learning, growing children. This course has highlighted again and again the importance of providing children enough time for children to just be children, explore, socialize, and decompress. Days packed with instructional time can be overwhelming and take the liveliness out of learning. Nonetheless I extremely value the documentation. It takes the learning experience deeper and allows for more meaningful reflection. I also feel like it can show the different strengths each student has through the learning experience, not just the final result. Documenting a students learning making the assessment more meaningful as well and allows teachers to judge more accurately whether or not a students is grasping the content. Documentation also allows for the learning to be more student led opposed to the teacher choosing each step of the learning.
