Competency Assessment

Upon completion of the School Counselor Competency Assessment developed by the American School Counselor Association (2019), I have a better understanding of myself, strengths, and weaknesses. The assessment is of value because is displaying the areas that I need to develop. I found my skills indirect and direct services were farther advanced than I first anticipated. Working with families is something that I have spent a better part of my career doing. So to advance into working for the greater good of my students would only be the next step. I also felt that receiving and converging data is something I thought I knew more about, but I was wrong. This is an area that needs improvement. The legal and ethical principles portion was very understandable as I have worked in the Social Work field which is filled with many issues on that level. Working within cultural and social and socioeconomic issues is an ever-changing component and we must be willing to learn and complete continuing education in order to stay afloat. I would also be very excited to help with career choices and be involved in advocacy for all my students.

American School Counselor Association.
