Step 1 is to set up a coordinate system indicating both positive translational direction and positive rotational directions. In this case, the x-direction is to the left, y-direction is vertical and positive rotation is clockwise.
Step 2 involves isolating the vehicle from its surroundings. The ground remains as it is used as a datum for dimensions.
Step 3 involves marking the applied forces and reaction loading. Unlike particle problems, these forces are applied at their actual locations, not the mass centre. Obviously, the only exception is the object’s weight.
Steps 4–5 are as for particle free-body-diagram.

A van has a mass of 2000 kg and a centre of gravity at Gv. It carries a fixed load of 350 kg which has a centre of gravity at Gt. The van is travelling at 12 m/s when the brakes are applied causing all the wheels to lock and skid. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the wheels and the road is 0.3. Draw the free-body diagram and kinetic diagrams of the van. Use these diagrams to write down equations of motion for the van and hence calculate the deceleration of the van as it skids to complete stop. Hint: you need only the equations for translational motion for this problem!
