When I made a trip there with a few of my fellow cadets, I first found out about the objectives of the programme. It was meant to encourage and inspire many households within Hong Kah North to turn off at least one unnecessary light or appliance for one hour on 25 Mar 2017. Furthermore, it was meant create awareness, educate and provide solutions to Hong Kah North residents, especially to youths aged 15 to 35, on ways to be environmentally conscious. As per the programme we were assigned to a specific HDB Block in Hong Kah North. A week before the event, we informed the residents about the switching off of corridor lights and invited the residents to join us during the event day. We also sold the event's tickets during the door-to-door publicity. It was extremely exciting getting to interact with the neighbours, who were receptive and warm to us. While some did not receive us favourably, there were those, who kindly invited us to their homes. On the day of the actual event, we had so much fun. But, when the lights went off, we realised the importance of light as it was pitch black and we could not see anything clearly. We began to discuss the consequences of a massive blackout if it were to occur. It is really a fun and exciting event. Yet, one can hone his or her focusing skills very well through this sport. A lesser-known fact is that Air Pistol shooting is a very popular sport in Singapore. Basically, we use around 15 pellets and 3 small pieces of papers to place as targets. At the start, we will watch a video about how the air pistol has to be held, and learn the safety precautions given by a trained instructor. Shooting is divided into 2 components: Dry and Actual shoots. Each of us had at least 5 minutes to sharpen our skills and embark on the competitive rounds. Some of my friends were telling me after the shooting practices that they were more than confident to handle the revolver shooting that would follow soon. This year was a pretty short scale camp event due to the safety considerations at the holding site. Yet, we were looking forward to the hiking trip that concluded the camp event. Mr Saravanan and Mr Ang together with the CIs facilitated the camp event. We were supported by the cadet leaders, who took care of our needs from start to the end of the programme. Before the hiking trip, we had packed all our bags and other camping items. The challenge of the trip doubled, as we had to carry these heavy items along with us. Yet, our CIs assured us that it is an attainable goals as everything had depended on our willpower and determination. Throughout the hiking trip that started from Dunearn Secondary School (Boon Lay Site) all the way to Bukit Batok, we kept ourselves preoccupied with NPCC songs and cheers. I felt very happy when I heard sounds around us that not only enlivened us but also made passers-by stop and admire us. I would not be surprised if our trip would be featured in the newspapers. Ha-ha! Let us see whether this materializes soon. Although it was an extremely long trip, our journey was made easier by the available park connectors, which we made, use of. During the trip, we had found out that Kluang is named after a type of fruit bat because the place was swarmed by creature of this breed before people had moved into these areas. I can assure you all this trip had a great mix of food, fun, education and adventure. Talking about adventure, we had one of the best moments of our life when we hiked Mount Lumpur. It is 510m high mountain which will be scaled up from one end and scaled down from the other end. The uphill trek is very tiring and exhausting as the path is very steep. Yet, it is not dangerous at all as a very good and knowledgeable tour guide escorted us. The other exciting activity we did was rafting coupled with a water obstacle course that challenged our limits. We built a raft at the Eco-Farm Resort and used that to navigate a man-made pond. Can you get it? A man-made pond! How exciting will that be? Building a raft and the rafting activity strengthened our team-building skills, which are essential for survival nowadays. The water obstacles course was a bit more unique as crossing them required various skills that included the ability to balance oneself for a long time as well as to interact and coordinate with team members.
