1. Ms. Muench (AP Literature)was reading a section of the book :"Jayne Eyre". Students were so focused and attentive on what she was presenting. Talking about "mood" and "tone" in describing the room. Students are definitely participating in and are engaged in the discussion. I didn't realize that there were many words to describe and analyze tone. Excellent presentation of "tone". Making guesses and supporting it with evidence. Great teaching! Michelle Davis

I am in the college chemistry lab and I am completely amazed at the lab of iodine and zinc. He is very enthusiastic about this two-day lab, and so are students. I wish I could explain what I saw, but I am a music teacher..LOL. I have never taken a college chem class!! Ha! Students are attentive and focused during this lab. Michelle Davis

I am feeling very comfortable in the band room! I know exactly what is happening. Students are working on performing a steady beat with the metronome. They are socially distanced and wearing masks until they perform. Mrs. True has a microphone on so students can hear. She is working on students breathing together. She is making sure it's perfected by having them count before they come in. I can tell she is a perfectionist like me! she is asking the lower brass if they are "too slow or too fast" They responded by saying they were "too slow". The ensemble proceeded to perform a cool Bon Jovi tune. "Living on a Prayer". One of my favorites. They sounded terrific. So many percussionists.. It was interesting the students had doggie "potty pads" for their condensation..cool idea. Michelle Davis

Mr Werner does such a fantastic job of contextualizing students learning with other content. I saw him consistently checking for student engagement, breaking down complex concepts in a variety of ways for different learning styles, and lecturing with dynamism to keep everyone in attendance engaged.

Got to speak with Mr. Ludwig about scaffolding content to accelerate the speed of delivery because we only see students two days a week. Fantastic strategy to build half of the bridge for students and let them complete the work as opposed to letting them build the whole thing from scratch. Mr. Eikel does such a good job quizzing his students as he delivers content. Love the strategy. Tim Baldwin

As a science teacher, I liked the way Mrs. Bryant had her class managed. A couple of teams were cooking and following directions with her guidance and others were online taking a pre-quiz. Then, they rotate. This maintained social distancing while keeping every student engaged in the lesson. Mrs. Bryant also had a digital timer running so students knew their progress as they worked. Seeing the students engaged in making masks out of cardboard was really neat! The students were asking questions and coming up with creative ideas to use their extra cardboard to give their masks the look they were going for. I love the energy in Mr. Baldwin's virtual class. He used multiple methods to engage the students and he was able to see who was engaged by asking them to make an observation and post it in their communal notes.

Love the whiteboard activity in Mrs. Knowles Zoology class! My favorite part was how she encouraged students to "fix or add" when they arrived to a whiteboard with a new part of the cell. Love the positive phrasing of how she saw things that were "not quite perfect" that needed to be fixed. I am going to hopefully steal this activity for my math classes! It's like an editable gallery walk.

I loved the level of engagement in Mr. Baldwin's virtual class. Students were participating, engaging in discourse, and explaining their ideas thoughtfully. I liked that Mr. Baldwin addressed every student by name, was always complimentary when students spoke up, and used a number of methods to clarify the information provided to make sure students understood the concepts. This is what a virtual class should look like! Thanks for sharing, Mr. Baldwin.

Ms. Ramsey's advanced pre calculus class is going over her "Hybrid Learning Organization Survey" They are also looking at their canvas page to make sure students can navigate what assignments to complete. Everything is in the "modules". Very organized. She has a video for every day!! Great idea. Most students know where to go for assignments and seems like students know where to go for help as well. She reiterates to check the canvas inbox. She is telling students to download the canvas app...She is asking students to email her and she will get back to them. Reminds students to come in before and after school. I wish I had a math teacher like Ms. Ramsey in high school. She is excellent.

Stopped by to see the Preschool Buddies - all were very actively engaged in a variety of activities. The early birds seemed to be having fun and you could tell they were able to demonstrate their knowledge when asked to perform a task or answer a question - depending on which activity they were engaged in.

I am so impressed with the engagement and critical thinking in the Virtual Classrooms. Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Jasperson have created learning designs that incorporate, discussion, formative feedback, brain breaks, collaborative learning, breakouts for deeper inquiry, stimulating visuals to spark thinking and much much more! Ludwig- I could sit in your class all day! You have created an environment in which kids are comfortable sharing answers, right or wrong, and asking questions. You asked a question about factions and a kid asked "what are factions?" He probably should have known that, but he was comfortable to ask and you answered like it was no big deal. Students feel comfortable in your room and it shows. Talking about factions made me think about 'Divergent' and talking about the Federalist papers has me singing Hamilton songs in my head now. Coach Werner does a great job engaging students right from the start of class with his Question of the Day. He also uses this as a way to review what the students learned in class the previous day. Carrie Kendall: Sarah Adams did an excellent job teaching a sensitive subject: the human reproductive process, menstruation and conception, explaining how each is tied to the other using biological terms and straightforwardness. Students were encouraged to write the essential question somewhere on the notes, which is something I have always written on the notes for my students, so that was a big take-away for me!

Shout out to Deanna Neldon for connecting with her kids via Zoom to ensure they all were connected and engaged in learning. Watching kids light up when they see their teacher was a highlight of my day! Logistically we found, you can Zoom in a full class, earbuds are essential for reducing the noise feedback.

Wow... I really enjoyed watching Tim Baldwin in action as a virtual teacher in our Liberty Virtual School. He was teaching synchronously and the strategies used really impacted learning. I asked him if they keep their communal notes or if they move them to their personal notes and Tim said, "What I tell the kids is that the communal notes is a place to be bold, daring, and wrong. I tell them it's OK to be messy on the notes because that's how I see their thinking." Here is an example of one communal note.

Mr Eikel leading a discussion and the students were taking notes on the computers. I LOVE how the notes had the essential questions on them and the students were actually putting answers to them. Mr. Baldwin was answering questions for students and I love how other students in the group were chiming in as well. The students had their questions/answers on google docs and referring to them as they were discussing. The students that were not in the discussion were preparing to go next. Man...Mr. Baldwin has the debate voice! When he talks we ALL listen. He is clearly very compassionate about what he teaches and it is felt as soon as you walk in the room. Flanigan’s Spanish 3 students were reading a news article about forest fires in Paraguay and predicting which words in Spanish they might see in the article.

Lumetta's French 4 students were doing a group activity about injuries and body parts in French while her French 5 were reading an article out loud and translating.

I was so thrilled to hear the women's choir this morning, since we can't attend the concert on the 17th. Mrs. Roller has prepared these ladies to use their talents to sing gorgeously! I loved the use of solfege to help remember their pitches. You could tell the students loved this, and you could tell Mrs. Roller loved them!

I really liked the interactive maps I saw students use and engaged with in Mrs. Flanigan's Spanish room. Awesome idea for cells and other concepts in biology.

In room 500, I was able to see the screen printing in action while students made me a t-shirt! I also noticed that there was a pile of "mistakes" or shirts that students had messed up on. That pile is labeled "Evidence of Learning." I LOVE that. Learning is messy. I will be adding a pile like that to my art room:)

I observed group learning and collaboration with LEAP in the Black Box. Students were working together to create posters and time lines of events. In the EDGE, there was a lot of independent learning by students as well as classroom learning in the various teaching spaces. It is a wonderful space for this type of learning environment. All students seemed to be engaged and working hard. Some students were getting individual help from the teachers.

Mr. Eikel did a great job engaging his students by asking important questions for them to answer while they were taking notes during his lesson over the 1787 Constitutional Convention. The students were giving excellent responses and seemed actively engaged in their learning. Bravo, Mr. Eikel! -- Jacob Meyer

EDGE. Lot's of great learning going on in there. I was able to watch Mr. Turpin analyze sales pitches with the class for substance, form , structure, and order. Mrs. Ajayi was able to work one one one with a students in math. I also had a unique opportunity to talk with Mrs. Bryant on how she incorporates art within their overall project. The nest (as always) was a positive, inspiring environment. I saw the employee of the month get recognized, and everyone was ecstatic for Ali. There are so many great options for our LHS students and I was thrilled to see this information being presented in an organized way specifically targeting our current 10th and 11th graders. Sometimes I think our students miss out on opportunities just because they aren't aware of what they are. I really like how he does QOD, it helps review content from the previous day for the students and acts as a “warmup” for the students. Students are actively answering questions as Mr. Werner is constantly asking them. As I looked around at everyone’s screens, everyone was on the correct tab and doing what they were supposed to. There was no dead silence after he asked a question, there was always a different student who knew that answer. He also encourages students who haven’t answered yet, to answer. - Ally Shultz

Relaxing music playing and cool lighting. Each employee was working and doing their own job. Such a positive environment to be in and I will definitely grab a coffee soon!! They have pictures of all students who work on a bulletin board and I think it's super cool to recognize them! I also went into the library and it's also a relaxing environment to be in to study.

When we walked in, students were all in a circle laughing, everyone was engaged.
I like the circle idea because it was a small group and that way everyone was included . The teacher spoke really loud and clear for everyone. The students were telling stories and used hand gestures to explain words they didn't know that way, other students in the class could help them with the German word that they were looking for. - Ally Shultz

We think doing labs is a great way to learn while making sure students aren't tuning out! I loved visiting in with the Child dev and Early Birds. It was great to see both high school mentors and the Early Birds were engaged and enjoying their time. When I asked one EBer what she was doing, she said she was doing her "lab". The EB assignments in their "lab" time was structured to meet the learning needs of each student. This is a great model of mentoring and the attention given to each small learner is something that I know will be a positive influence affecting their futures!

LHS is so blessed to have multiple opportunities for students to experience real world business. While in Libertees, I observed students using machinery and tools with expertise as well as being safety conscientious. I know that these skills did not just happen, but required hours of careful planning and pre-teaching...Amber and Crystal- you guys are amazing!

I love the Math Flex space and how effectively Ms. Ramsey uses it with her students! I also loved visiting Libertees and seeing the great hands-on work and the enthusiasm of the students for their projects.

Went down to the 900s to see Mr. Griffis' class and learned about various bands, the spread of Crocs, Wendy's, etc. Then went off script to Mr. Moree's classroom where his students were learning about distortion and trying to walk the hallways.

6th Hour

I visited Lindenmeyer's classroom and was very intrigued by the self-paced learning for science class. I loved that they started out with an opening activity and worked together as a cohesive class and then moved on to their independent learning. I imagine there is A LOT of planning that takes place to front load this type of course.

I also stopped in Grifis' and Werner's classrooms. All students were engaged in their learning. -> Even though Werner stated on his class description "not the most exciting of days in World History" due to the grading of an assignment - students were genuinely interested and participating in the discussion.

Last, orchestra - I have never been to the music classrooms. That was a fun stop to see that part of the building. I enjoyed watching Ms. Davis model for the students during practice and listening to the talent of LHS students.

Mr. Griffis and The Nest

I went down to Mr. Griffis’ room after another teacher told me to go check out what he was doing. Very cool project that the kids were doing and were engaged into their learning. The students I talked to were researching Minecraft, African Language, and Surrealist Art.

I stopped in the Nest as well. They were working hard cleaning up for the day. I have several of those students in class and it was great to see them working in a different environment.

I started in Mr. Jacobs room for advanced woodworking and it was really cool to see all the students working together on projects. I talked to one of the groups and they were making a bike rack for Liberty Oaks, which I found to be really cool.

Next, I went to Werner's room and they were going over a life in the middle age's worksheet and all the students seemed to be engaged and had a good understanding of the topic.

THE NEST: I went to the nest and I absolutely loved my time there. A super collaborative environment structured on teamwork and building problem-solving skills. I love that the school and our teachers are providing this avenue for our students to apply real-world skills to a school function. It was an incredibly fun, calm, and inviting environment where students worked together very closely as a team. Each had a specific job that all together created amazing teamwork!

HERNANDEZ: This was such a fun class to watch! The entire class was speaking in German for the entirety of my stay. When I say the entire class, I mean every student contributed new ideas or opinions making the discussion super fun to watch. Students were encouraged to try to think of new ways of thinking and to try to say new phrases. Ms. Hernandez was incredibly encouraging and allowed her students to make mistakes by creating a safe environment the encouraged trying new things. It was an absolute pleasure to watch this class!

I visited Mr. Werner's World History classroom and they were working on an online assignment. Everyone was doing what they were supposed to be. I ask a few students and they said that he allowed enough time for all the students to complete their assignment. As students worked, he also plays music for students and asks for their preference.

I was able to watch parts of the Advanced Pre-Calc class. It was a super calm, collaborative environment. Today was a workday, and each group was working together to complete any missing work and the study materials for their upcoming test. Ms. Ramsey walked around the class, checking in with her students and helped them clear up any confusion as her students studied. A very great learning environment where a lot was getting done!

I visited Coach Laws' classroom, and he had the students engaged in reviewing for their quiz tomorrow. He did a great job providing the students numerous choices of review options they could do to prepare for the quiz. The students enjoyed having the options and being able to take ownership of their learning! Coach Laws did a great job of working around the room and helping answer any questions the students had. Mr. Eikel was leading a class discussion over Gerrymandering in his American Government class. The students were engaged taking notes and answering questions from Mr. Eikel. He did a great job relating this topic to them in the state of Missouri and why it will be important to them as they turn 18 and get to vote. Great job!

I went to see Mrs. Ramsay during her 4 hour class, the students were currently doing homework. A few of the students had questions and Mrs. Ramsey talked them through the problem/s that said students struggled with. She talked through the problems and made sure the student with the question understood the process. The students also helped collaborate when they were doing their homework. The students were very engaged in the assignments they were given, not a lot of messing around. Some of the students I talked to have blended their knowledge with AP Calc in order to assist with other subjects, like physics.

I went to see the Edge in action today. The students were getting instructions from Mr. Baldwin and then were released to go work on their projects they are currently working on. I also looked at the punch list to see what the students are to accomplish this week in their classes.

Coach Fleming had a fun game of Speedminton going on in the field house. Students were actively playing and participating in the game. Fun festive music was playing too!

It was great to see the Edge students at work and visit with them about the program. They shared various projects from the semester and expressed a lot of excitement about the freedom that they have to work, research, and design what they are interested in. One student showed me his computer and how the grading is competency based. He also explained the different villages within the school. It was very interesting and fun to learn about the Edge!

I went to see Mrs. Brooks ELA 11 class working on creating their own quilt squares. They had completed work on the meaning of culture and ethnicity this week and were creating their quilt square to represent themselves. Quilts are inherently full of tradition themselves so tying them to the study of culture and tradition of people is wonderful. The students were all actively discussing their choices and creations, it was a very engaged class! Amazing to see and inspiring for future lessons.

I visited the EDGE to listen to students discuss their books on social inequalities. I loved how they researched the author to discover their connection or reason for writing the book.

Coach Frigon's class was split into two groups during their workout today. One group was doing a cardio workout and monitoring their heart rate as they exercised. The second group was going through a dumbbell circuit workout. I was impressed with how all the students were engaged and putting in a good effort in the workout.
