People during this time did not like communism and did not want the entertainment thy would watch in Hollywood to be followed or inspired or developed by communism. Due to this feeling, the employment of these positions and these people they were suspicious of, were denied. He was fined and jailed for defying the rules of this committee. Despite the biased hiring for film-makers during the 1930s and 40s, Lardner Jr. was one of the secret communists hired to be a film-maker. After his career had already taken off, a press conference was held and the question, "Are you a part of the Communist Party", came across and his career would never be the same. He eventually admitted to being a Communist and was fined and sentenced to a year in jail. After his time was served he was blacklisted and lead to him not being able to find work because of him being blacklisted. As a result of that he had to go under the  
 aleis, Martin Ransohoff and ended up winning his second Oscar. After his long, successful, and also bumpy career he was the last of the Hollywood 10 blacklist film-makers to die.
