In Act 2, Scene 1, of The Tempest, after Ariel puts all but Antonio and Sebastian to sleep, Sebastian is convinced by Antonio to kill Alonso, the king of Naples. First Antonio gets Sebastian to admit that he has no hope that Ferdinand, the rightful heir to the throne of Naples, is dead, lost at sea, never to be resurrected. Of course this is not true; Next Antonio convinces Sebastian that a dead king and a sleeping king are one and the same, an argument so effective—however untrue—that Sebastian draws his sword. Here the power of language to obscure reality and then determine a different idea about reality from which people act is obvious. Antonio refers to this building of false realities through language as a kind of "flow," which he teaches to Sebastian. Sebastian demonstrates that he is an apt pupil of Antonio's when, upon the other men's waking, he narrate fake a story that about why his sword is drawn.
R RAMNIVAS
30.09.2020

Shakespeare also explored the relationship between reality and illusion. ... Throughout the piece, Shakespeare portrays that illusion may be used to veil reality, but in the end, reality always makes itself apparent through the characters' actions. The role of language in Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest” is quite significant. To Miranda and Prospero the use of language is a means to knowing oneself. Caliban does not view language in the same light. Prospero taught Caliban to speak, but instead of creating the feeling of empowerment from language, Caliban reacts in insurrectionary manner. Language reminds him how different he is from Miranda and Prospero, and also how they have changed him. It also reminds him of how he was when he wasn’t a slave. He resents Prospero for “Civilising” him, because in doing so he took away his freedom.
T. NATESH PANDIAN
30/9/20

In the tempest there are many scenes where Shakespeare explores the tensions between language and reality But for now let's concentrate on Act-2 Scene-1 Where Ariel uses his magic power to make everyone to sleep and Antonio convinces Sebastian that a dead king and king that doesn't do anything is the same and convinced him to kill Antonio's brother here is where the power of language is obstruct to reality. The way Antonio convinces Sebastian through his words to kill the king, This is where Shakespeare explores the tensions between language and reality.
-Mukesh S

Shakespeare explore the tensions between language and reality in Tempest in Act 1 scene 2. When Ariel make everyone asleep expect Antonio and Sebastian, Antonio tries to convince Sebastian to kill her brother Alonso. He console him by saying that dead son Ferdinand and sleeping kind are on are one and the same, an argument so effective but however untrue that Sebastian draws his sword. Here the power of language to obscure reality and then determine a different idea about reality from which people act is obvious..

The tempest explores the tensions between language and reality in many situations but we can focus on the scene where Antonio's actual language convinces Sebastian to kill the king but his language is not a reality. Antonio says that Ferdinand is dead or lost in sea and would never be able to rise again but in reality he is alive in another part of island and thus his language is more effective that the reality and that conversation between him and Sebastian is very important in the play since it publishes the real motive and thoughts of these characters to the readers.
-Rishwanth.R
30/9/20

- How does Shakespeare's The Tempest explore the tension between language and reality?

Answer- In the play 'The Tempest', in act 2, scene, the tension between language and reality is explored by Shakespeare. When Sebastian and Antonio begins to absured their idea, Ariel makes everyone asleep except both of them. Antonio gives Sebastian an idea of murdering Alonso to capture the kingdom from him, thinking that Ferdinand has drowned and died by the shipwreck, that was not true which Antonio continuously said to convince Sebastian that Ferdinand was dead. Ferdinand had just been lost in the other part of the island which Antonio and Sebastian thought was dead. In the scene the tension between language and reality (false) is created by Antonio.

- Jenisha Angel. S

Exploration with languages in these situations of the play is put by Shakespeare in a perfect way. Caliban's language theory of son of witch is easily imposed by the playwright. The whole scene of Act 1 Scene 2 revolves around the storm and the effect of storm. The reality shows the storm is nature and language shows it is magic. He had nearly proved the equality between language and reality. Prospero plays magic which is language and impossible in reality. He acts totally different with each and every one with accordance. The tension to the language and reality lies even within the characters as Ariel and Caliban. The dialogues within Antonio and Sebastian of plan of assassination could be some reality.
- Gokula Thirumeni T

The Tempest , right from the start of the play it has some kind of tensions. And then tension increases rapidly and gradually from scene to scene or act to act. Characters like Antonio and especially spirits like Ariel makes the scenes even more tensed. In Act 2 scene 1, Ariel put all asleep except Antonio and Sebastian. Here, Antonio suggests Sebastian assassination of his brother Alonso. This situation shows the real tension in reality. Comparing to Act1 scene 1, this scene has more tension in language and in reality. Prospero's art is also considered to be a language. Prospero's magical arts creates a large impact in the reality which are wholly responsible for all causes such as shipwreck and assassination.
-DEVARAJ.S

"How does Shakespeare's The Tempest explore the tensions between language and reality?"
- Shakespeare's The Tempest explore the tensions between language and reality, where he illustrates the scene in which Ariel puts Alonso and Gonzalo to sleep, except Sebastian and Antonio, and later which Antonio convinces Sebastian to kill his brother Alonso, where he was so fallible through his language in the way that any would act as a puppet in his hands, so that he could rule the Dukedom of Naples, but actually Antonio being so greed wanted to execute his real plan that is he wanted to kill Sebastian as well and seize the rule and become a king. On the other hand Gonzalo is being telling Alonso that his son Ferdinand is dead in the shipwreck. But anyways, the statement that Gonzalo said was not true.. and Ferdinand was there in the other part of the island. This exhibits the reality in the play.

- S.M.SATHANA
