I think cocoa is bad for the ivory coast because newsela state,“Much of the cocoa crop is grown on farms where children work. The work is dangerous and keeps the children from a bright future." also Ivory coast #1 source of income is cocoa farming and if the cocoa farming gets shut down the country will become even more poor. Also all the leading chocolate company signed a contract that made it not have child labor but they still have child labor. Also, burkina faso mothers are selling their children for work so that they make money, even thought the children dont get pay somethimes. Also they dont get to have the family bonding time like we do.

A lot of people are saying how coca farming is bad because of child labor. I agree that this is bad. Although, 31 percent of children depend on cocoa farming for money and without it they would be working in much harsher conditions like coal mining and chimney sweeping. I believe that cocoa is good for the Ivory Coast because, in the article, “The future of Chocolate: Why cocoa production is at risk,” from the Guardian. It tells me various aspects of how cocoa farming is good. It tells me that many chocolate companies are helping to ensure a decent income for farmers and a long-term supply of quality product. This shows me that if you work for cocoa farming it provided necessary forms of money and food in order to stay alive.

Also, The money is increasingly being used to help producer organizations and farmers in strengthening their business. This means that they will be treated better and be able to get more food and money for their various needs. From that article “Cocoa for good” from Hershey it shows many examples of how cocoa farming is good for the Ivory Coast. For example, 31 percent of children have jobs in the Ivory Coast. This may sound like a bad thing but if you really think about this state you will find out that this is good. That is because if cocoa farming didn’t exist children would have to work in other harsher conditions. Such as chimney sweeping, coal mining, e.t.c. These are much worse conditions and, in extreme cases, cause death. Sure cocoa farming has its challenges such as deforestation and animals being hurt but companies are helping that. For example, companies are working towards putting laws in place to protect the environment, nourishing children, prospering communities, elevating youth, elimination of child labor and access to education. The question that was asked was why are they making children work if is so dangerous? I believe that the answer to this question is because children do not require much pay and farmers are able to get work done for much less pay. Also, children are tiny and can't fight back as much. Lastly, children are tiny and vulnerable so they can do work easily like climb the trees faster and easier than adults can. Lastly, I learned that chocolate took so much work and caused so many problems. After this unit I don't believe I will ever eat a chocolate bar the same again.

I think that chocolate is bad for the Ivory Coast, it's people, and the rainforests it contains.

One reason why I believe that cocoa farming is bad for the Ivory coast is because of child labor on cocoa farms. As stated in Newsela on the topic of child labor on cocoa farms “About 70 percent of the world’s cocoa production comes from West Africa. Unlike many types of farming, cocoa growing is dominated by smaller farms. An estimated 1.8 million children work on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast and Ghana combined. (Newsela Article)”. The quote states that 70% of all cocoa comes from the Ivory Coast which is a lot of chocolate, I know that most of the people living in the Ivory coast depend on chocolate for money which is very hard to earn because of the intense poverty in the area. Since the demand for cocoa in the world is so high and because of the fact, the Ivory Coast is one of the main producers of cocoa they often need more people which is why they have children do the job. Although many children volunteer to go so they can provide for their families they give up the chance to a good education and put themselves in dangerous working conditions with long hours and little pay. Most of the time though, children are kidnapped and sold to cocoa farms without any choice where they also have to work in bad conditions with sharp knives and chainsaws. Additionally as stated by the Food Empowerment Project, “Child Labor and Slavery in the Chocolate Industry” from 2015, “...begin working at a young age to support their families…. Between the ages of 12 and 16, but reporters have found children as young as 5. In addition, 40% are girls, and some stay for a few months, while others end up working on the cocoa farms through adulthood...”. This shows that children who are very young are forced in child labor on cocoa farms this is a bad thing because they don’t get the chance to a good education which is very important and aren’t paid well at all. In the same article, it was also said that children have to use chainsaws to clear trees in the rainforest and use a sharp knife called a matchet. Matches are very dangerous and are able to cut through a child’s skin, many children working with these matches are left with horrible scars. Using such things is very dangerous especially when children use them when forced in working on cocoa farms. To conclude one reason why cocoa farming is bad for the Ivory Coast is because of child labor on cocoa farms.

Another reason why cocoa farming is bad for the Ivory Coast is that cocoa farming causes deforestation of rainforests. While cocoa farming uses child labor it also causes the deforestation of the rainforest of the Ivory Coast not only are the trees affected but also organisms living in these rainforests. Deforestation causes these organisms to become endangered or even worse, go totally extinct and never seen again forever. In the article “Is Chocolate Driving Monkeys Into Extinction?” by John R. Platt it was stated, “Ten years ago the forests of the Ivory Coast were full of the hoots and howls of more than a dozen primate species. No more. Today the West African nation is much quieter. The forests are mostly gone and the monkeys that they once held aren’t far behind. Several species have become critically endangered. One may now be extinct..”. This shows that many of the monkeys in the rain forests of the Ivory Coast which is found in the West African nation have become endangered which is very bad. If the deforestation of these rainforests continues not only might these monkey species become extinct but all of the rainforests might be destroyed as well as many of the other organisms living in them. Furthermore many ‘protected areas’ haven’t been protected at all and were taken over by cocoa farms. In the article “Is Chocolate Driving Monkeys Into Extinction?” by John R. Platt it was said, “..more than 74 percent of the supposedly protected forests the researchers surveyed had been taken over by cocoa farms. All of this deforestation, combined with the hunting that accompanies it, has had a devastating impact on the Ivory Coast’s primates. Five of the surveyed protected areas were found to have lost half of their primate species. Another 13, the researchers found, were completely devoid of primates...”. This provides that many protected areas have been taken over by illegal cocoa farms and that the deforestation they cause has impacted the monkeys and the Ivory Coast dramatically. The deforestation and loss of many primates/monkeys in the Ivory Coast is definitely a negative of cocoa farming.

To conclude cocoa is bad for the Ivory Coast, it's people, and the rainforests it contains. Even though cocoa is the main ingredient of one of the most loved sweets, chocolate the price for it is too high to pay especially for the main producer, the Ivory Coast.

Cocoa is not good for the Ivory Coast because Several species are very endangered or gone because of cocoa and most forests are gone always because of cocoa. It also impacts people’s health. Children are working with so many hours and they are doing very dangerous jobs. They also can’t afford things like food, water, and shelter so that’s the main reason kids need to work to help their families. I agree with all of them because they talking on how no one is getting a good education and like Parker said every swing of the mechedie it could possibly end up taking kids lives away. I think that it is very unfair that even though there are lots of people everyday risking their lives for cocoa farming and even though they are doing all the work they get 5% of the pay where as manufactures end up getting 40% of the profits earned from cocoa farming. From Value of Chocolate. Then because the workers are only getting 5% of what they produce this is not giving the Ivory coast enough money if people get hurt.

I believe that cacao farming is bad for the Ivory Coast because kids are getting hurt, soled, and smuggled across the borders. In the video "The Dark Side Of Chocolate", they show that kids use machetes to get the cacao beans from the trees, and to cut the beans open to get the seeds out. These machetes can cut straight through skin, so kids can get diseases and infections, cause if they don't know how to clean those cuts correctly, and keep farming, a ton of germs could get into those cuts and infect it. Cacao farming is also bad for the families in the Ivory Coast because it's illegal to smuggle kids across the borders. Kids also have to go to school. It's illegal that they don't. There's a human right that says there can't be any child labor in the world, yet people are making kids work in these horrible conditions, and not even get pay for it. If you're gonna make kids work and break the laws, at least give them they money they worked for.
Yes, chocolate is good, but that has a lot of sugar added to it, and the people who make the cacao for it don't even get to eat it, and they don't even get most of the pay for it.
Parents are also selling their kids for money and as the kids work i these terrible conditions, the parents think they're earning a lot of money, but they couldn't be more wrong.
Animals are also being hurt with this process of cacao farming. This is because people are cutting down trees in forests to make enough room for the trees in the cacao farms

With the thought of using the massive dangerous tools.

I also agree with Shay because its not only who kids are in trouble but also the native species. Companys cut down the homes (trees) to increase illegal cocoa farming production.

Again I agree with Parker because kids are being sold to traffickers who say they get paid. The real question is how well are they getting paid. Even if they are getting paid at all. Not even that but cocoa farming is also breaking several Human Rights such as No Slavery, and A Right To Education. The reason why is that the owners of the farms are forcing these kids into labor, more than that these kids are doing jobs that are supposed to be for adults. As for education kids are working instead spending their hours in school.

Child labor on cocoa farms and mines. Exemplary part.
The child labor on cocoa farms isn’t anything new and in fact, cocoa farms are not the only place child labor in currently happening things such as child labor happen daily in big factories and also in mining for batteries.

The child labor happening on cocoa farms is very similar to the child labor happening currently in mines where children are forced to find the Cobalt we use as batteries in our phones. Congo, located in Africa is where the greatest amount of child labor is used when looking for Cobalt. Congo is where more than 60% of the world’s cobalt is found but it is also one of the poorest countries in the world, cobalt is a silver, grey metal but more than just that it is also what the batteries in our phones are made of. This is very similar to the Ivory coast which also is a main producer but of another good, cocoa beans. Both the Ivory Coast and Congo are very poor which is why child labor is occurring. Many children in Congo just like in the Ivory coast need to support their families so they decide to get a job by mining for cobalt. Mining for cobalt is very dangerous as stated in the article “The Real Cost of Batteries” by Junior Scholastic, “...Day after day, he’d descend hundreds of feet underground without any protective gear. Using a small chisel, he’d spend up to 24 hours at a time searching for cobalt, an essential component of the rechargeable batteries that power our smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices. Collecting cobalt is backbreaking—and life-threatening—work. At any moment, the mine’s tunnels could have caved in, leaving Paul buried in an avalanche of rocks and dirt. Cobalt miners are also exposed to toxic materials that can cause cancer, lung disease, and other serious health problems.”. This shows that mining for cobalt is very dangerous not only are children forced many feet underground but they are given no safety equipment and the environment is dangerous as well as said above the the mines tunnels could have caved inwards or fallen straight from above. These aren’t the only things that these kids are risking they are also being exposed to dangerous chemicals which could cause a serious disease for example cancer. Since many people are soo poor they might not have the money for a doctor to help kids who have been exposed to these chemicals and gotten seriously ill. Furthermore, in the same article “The Real Cost of Batteries” it was also said, “Last fall, an investigation by American journalist highlighted the hazardous conditions of the cobalt industry in the DRC, where 60 percent of the world’s cobalt is mined. The report detailed a number of human rights abuses, including a lack of worker protections and the use of child laborers like Paul...Last fall, an investigation by American journalists highlighted the hazardous conditions of the cobalt industry in the DRC, where 60 percent of the world’s cobalt is mined. The report detailed a number of human rights abuses, including a lack of worker protections and the use of child laborers like Paul.”. This shows that child labor is very common in Congo and that these children work in very dangerous conditions it is also stated that the companies and people forcing these children to work in such places are breaking many human rights. Additionally, the quote also shows more examples of the dangers of the work that these children have to do. For example accidents such as fires and tunnel collapses seem to be occurring very often and working to support their families’ kids such as Paul in child labor often are put in such near-death experiences. Just like chocolate, when we use our phones and other technology we don’t realize the lives lost behind the making of it.

Child labor on cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast is very similar to the child labor in cobalt mines in Congo. In both, the Ivory Coast and Congo children are forced or choose to go into dangerous jobs to support their families’ and both the Ivory Coast and Congo have a big supply of a certain good; the Ivory Coast has cocoa beans and Congo has a big supply of cobalt which is used in phone batteries. The entire situation is very similar to the one in the Ivory Coast children in child labor on both cocoa farms and in mines have to work in very dangerous conditions with little pay. In Congo children have to work very deep underground with no safety equipment were they are exposed to dangerous chemicals which can cause cancer on the other hand though children on cocoa farms have to use very sharp and dangerous knives and chainsaws which could also cause death. In both child labor situations, the goods they produce are often used by major brands, for example, the Ivory Coast has cocoa beans, some of which go to Hershey's. In Congo the cobalt is used for phone batteries, Apple is a phone company and some of the batteries go to them. In both the Ivory Coast and Congo though child labor is still, sadly, happening. Many children are still forced to work on cocoa farms and cobalt mines, it is important to know about this and it is important for people and organizations to educate the public about child labor everywhere not only the Ivory Coast and Congo.

There are also bad parts of the farming because in burkina faso mothers are selling their children for work so that they make money, and the mothers think that their children are in a safe work space but what they don’t know is that their children are in a very dangerous work space”One of the worst practices is trafficking children. Children in Ivory Coast come from neighboring countries Burkina Faso and Mali. They're then forced to work on cocoa farms. There are several ways farming could harm children’s health and safety. Spraying pesticides or using machetes are dangers. Working on cocoa farms can also interfere with a child’s education.”

I think Cocoa farming is bad because, well one reason is that they use child labor. many children get kidnapped and put to work, from as early as 6 am, also they make children as young as 5 years old work with machetes that can slice through skin plus they don't have any protection, many children can be found with scars all over their body, from swinging an hacking at the hard shelled been and if they hit just a little harder their had would be cut open. Not only do they use dangerous, weapons but they are also are consistently exposed to very dangerous and harming pesticides. Children who are working do not go to school which is a violation of the labor association stating that all work must not get in the way of school and/or education.

I think that cocoa farming is bad because not only is cocoa farming breaking the law by recruiting children from other countries to work on the cocoa farm they are also destroying the environment, such as all of the jungles. In the article "The chocolate industry is booming as rain forest are disappearing," it says, "25 percent of Africa use to be covered with rainforest and now less than 4 percent of the country is covered in rain forest" Rain forest are disappearing because of deforestation and cocoa farming is what is causing deforestation. Cocoa farmers are breaking the law and in the article, "was your easter candy made with child labor" it says, "2.1 million children were engaged in objectionable labor practices in cocoa farming in the Ivory coast and ghana." This means that 2.1 million children are being taken out of their country which is a ton of the children population in Africa. Children are also being told that if they go work on the cocoa farms that they will be paid money, when in reality children are not even being paid a dime. This is because cocoa farmers are using and taking advantage of children so they can come work on the farm but the farmers wont have to pay them because the farmers just assume the children dont know whats happening. Another reason why cocoa farming is bad is because of the fact that cocoa farmers are breaking at least 3 different human rights. The 26, 13, and 5th human rights are all being violated in the cocoa farming industry. human right 26 is the right to education and this is being violated because when the children are being taken to cocoa farms they are forced to drop out of school and not get the education they need. Human rights 13 is also being violated, the right to move, the reason this human right is being violated is because when the children are working on the farm they are not allowed to leave the cocoa farm if they want to and they are also not allowed to go back home either. The final human right that is being violated is human right number 5, the right to no torture. The reason this human right is being violated is because kids are having to use machetties to cut down cocoa beans and that results in them having cuts and scars all over their body. The kids are also not allowed to have snacks while they are working hours on end, which fatigues them and makes them weaker and unhealthy.

In conclusion, cocoa farming is very bad. Its bad for children, the environment and more.

I do not think that Cocoa farming is good for the Ivory Coast because there are many kids that are in danger because of the dangerous working conditions and the dangerous materials that they are forced to use. It is also bad because it is harming the animals in the forests and is taking down their homes and even their lives. It says in the article "Is Chocolate driving monkeys to extinction?" from Scientific American, "Several Species have been critically endangered. One may now be extinct." This shows that things are very hard for those animals because of those people who are cutting down those trees from Cocoa farming.

I think the negative issues from Cocoa farming should be addressed by not forcing children to work at that young of age. Although it is an undeveloped country and there are a lot of family's that need money, they still should not have their young children, at ages like 5, work in the Cocoa farming. Family's should be more smart about their decisions with their children. They should know that their children need an education rather than having to work in the dangerous conditions.

Something that I found surprising is the fact that there are young children's family members putting them into this unfair and dangerous work for their own children. The fact that children are getting dropped out of school to do this work is very surprising too because their education should be more important then doing what they are doing. Especially when they aren't even getting the money that they deserve in the first place.

That proves that that is bad because they are giving these five year old's weapons and they don't even now what they can do. Also in the article is chocolate driving monkeys to extinction it said, "several species have become critically endangers or possibly instinct. the cause? Chocolate." that is bad because the animals could die from this if they don't stop it.

The negatives of cocoa farming should be addressed by spreading awareness about the issue such as in news articles and TV. There should also be schooling and proper pay provided to children in child labor since they still need money for their families and improved working conditions. Raising money for better working conditions and bringing an end to child labor isn’t new, for example in the Newsela article on the topic of child labor in cocoa farms it had been stated that “...Cargill officials say the company is among the industry’s leading investors in the child labor fight. Cargill has spent $5 million in the past three years in Ivory Coast and Ghana on a program designed to end child labor abuse. That's according to a Cargill representative, Taco Terheijden. And Cargill should soon announce a three-year extension of that plan. (Newsela Article)” This shows that there are many organizations already working hard to end child labor on cocoa farms using money. Sadly, still many people are unaware of what happens in cocoa farms so spreading awareness about the issue is important as well as stopping it altogether.

One thing that I found surprising was when in the Newsela article on the topic of child labor it stated, “ But while stopping abuse on cocoa farms, they still want to keep production high. Government and media reports have described kids forced to drop out of school — or even abducted and made to work without pay. These reports have dogged the cocoa industry for more than a decade. There have been many corporate-backed attempts to cure the child labor problem. But those efforts have fallen short. Hordes of children continue to work on cocoa farms, some in unsafe conditions(Newsela Article)”. This quote shows that while many people and organizations are trying to stop child labor in cocoa farms they still want to produce lots of cocoa to sell, this makes it even harder to stop child labor in these farms. What is even worse is that some kids have to drop out of school so they are unable to become educated and aren’t paid for working in unsafe conditions. This is surprising to me because before starting to learn more about this topic I would not have known that child labor isn’t only happening in factories but also farms. It is surprising that whenever I eat chocolate I never think about child labor which happened just because of the demand for chocolate.

In fact, I hadn’t heard much about deforestation and child labor on cocoa farms before, so this mini-unit taught be a lot of new information and issues that are currently happening today, some of which I hadn’t know about before.
