Bill Nelson (Born September 29, 1942 in Miami, FL) is the Democratic candidate for the 2018 Florida Senate election.

He is the current incumbent and has served for 3 terms and is running against Rick Scott, the Republican challenger.

Before his run for the Florida senate in 2000, he fought in the U.S army, went into space on the NASA Columbia in 1986, and was in the U.S House of Representatives for 12 years.

His stances correlate with his party because he and the Democratic party argue for equal access to healthcare, forcing rules on big corporations, protecting the environment, and creating jobs for more people. He would be considered mid-left on the flat-line spectrum for his views. On the compass he would be a libertarian liberal.

Outside spending - Super PACs: Senate Majority PAC ($21,809,210), For Our Future ($2,105,673), and Win Justice PAC ($1,266,244)

Rick Scott (Born December 1, 1952 in Bloomington, IL) is currently running for the Florida senate election as a Republican

He is the challenger of current incumbent Bill Nelson, and is the 45th Governor of Florida

Before his run for senate, Rick Scott was the 45th governor of Florida for two terms, and was an executive of the Columbia Hospital Corporation of American

His company lead to his biggest scandal where the company had to pay 1.7 billion dollars after a federal investigation found his company guilty of fraud. He later resigned from the company in 1997 and moved to Naples, Florida

His stances on issues connects to the Republican party because he argues for lower corporate taxes, limited government spending, the repeal of Obamacare, and for lowering taxes. With these views he would be considered close-right because he does have other liberal views like supporting Gun Control. On the compass he would be referred as a libertarian conservative.

Outside spending - Super PACs: New Republican PAC ($29,512,306), Americans for Prosperity Action ($1,235,370), and 501c US Chamber of Commerce ($750,000)

The 2018 Florida Senate race is between Bill Nelson (Democratic Party), and Rick Scott (Republican Party) Currently, Bill Nelson is in the lead in the polls, most of the time by 2 points or more

Although Nelson is the incumbent and has been in the senate for the past 18 years Scott, the previous governor, has a major advantage in campaign, by spending more money than 3 times as Nelson has with raising around $68,000,000 compared to Nelson's $28,000,000

Examples of Interest groups and outside spending for Bill Nelson include America Votes Action Fund, Black Economic Alliance, For Our Future, and Priorities USA Action

Examples of interest groups and outside spending for Rick Scott include Our American Century, Liberty4Florida, Conservative Trust for America, and Americans for prosperity

Democrats are on the defense in a state that Trump won in the 2016 presidential election. Some of the topics debated on are hurricane relief and environmental issues along with job creation as well. These issues are shared and can be considered valence since they both have considerably close stances on the matters except environmental issues.

Even though Trump's presence and the difference of campaign spending in the election, Bill Nelson is ahead of Scott by more than +2 points in each poll, and only drops to a tie in one between them.

Bill Nelson is going to win the Florida Senate Race against Rick Scott. Nelson has Florida’s support on main issues. On the issue of gun control Nelson supports stricter regulations unlike Scott who thinks most kinds of guns are fine to buy. Florida voters support stricter gun regulations 62%-33%. Nelson also has the upper hand in health care; he supports Obamacare and Medicaid expansion whereas Scott opposes Obamacare and Medicaid expansion. Florida is the number one state for use of Obamacare and the majority of Floridians support Medicaid expansion. Although Scott has a majority of support in immigration, Nelson seems to be in control of two of the top three issues, with a 1.4% lead in the polls.
