But since they can both persist only a few hours in the water, the timing is crucial. But scientists have recently noticed that the timing has become more erratic, increasing chances of extinction. A carpenter ant infected with a zombie ant fungus in the genus Ophiocordyceps (a genus fungi). It then grows a spore releasing stalk out of the back of the victim's head to infect more ants on the ground below.
