I chose the book Listen How Evelyn Glennie, a Deaf Girl, Changed Percussion. I chose this book because the main character, Evelyn Glennie went deaf as a child but never gave up on her love of percussion and became a famous percussionist. Since Evelyn is a real person, this will help inspire Dakota and teach her that she is not limited by her disability. This book is recommended for kindergarten through second grade.

I chose Moses goes to a concert a book about a group of children who are deaf. This book focuses on how Moses and his friends enjoy activities that most people think deaf people couldn't enjoy. This book is a tool to teach children basic signs in order to introduce them to ASL. The end of the book includes two pages of basic ASL signs this would help Dakota introduce her friends to ways to communicate with her.

I chose My City Speaks, a story book about a young blind girl who is exploring the city with her dad. The book focuses on describing the city in ways other than sight. I chose this book to introduce Dakota to another young girl who has a differently disability than her. Seeing this young girl enjoy things without sight will inspire Dakota to find ways to enjoy things without hearing. This book is recommended for kindergarten through second grade.

I chose Berry Song a book about a girl and her grandmother who collect gifts from the earth throughout the book including wild berries. They sing to the land and the land sings to them. They do this in order to show their appreciation for nature and in return the land gives them gifts. This book is about an indigenous girl and her relationship with the land in which she lives an important part of indigenous culture. I chose this book to help Dakota learn more about her culture as an indigenous girl and how she can connect with the spirit of the land. This book is recommended for ages 4-8.
