Community service in the classroom can be seen through individual efforts, class-wide efforts, and school-ride efforts. Schools have a big chance to make sizable differences in the community. Because school is where most kids spend a majority of their day, it is a great place to reinforce the importance of community service. I think it is very important for classrooms to participate in community service in order to promote it among children.

I love community service so incorporating in my classroom is a big deal to me. I think it is important for my future classroom to serve their community. The first thing I want them to see is the difference I make in our community which will hopefully inspire them to get involved in the community as well. Thinking of opportunities back home I would hope our grade as a whole would spend time outside doing work for the community like gardening so we can possibly tie it into science.
HG

I think that community service looks a lot different in the classroom than what I have previously thought. Community service can be done as a class but it is different to do community service in just the classroom. Students can learn a lot from the action that is taken to clean up the playground or volunteer somewhere. Something that I did in school was penny wars where each class was competing to get the most pennies to give to charity. In high school we participated in Adopt a Family at Christmas time and it did really impact us. Programs like these were really good at teaching students what is important in schooling.
SE

Community service in the elementary classroom can be a whole plethora of things. I have seen classrooms and schools do community service within their own bubble of a school or classroom, but I have also seen schools reach out to other schools. A school I worked at had pen pals at a school in Africa and they had a service day where they created art for the people to sell in their communities. I think it's important to teach kids to serve their community and even beyond because it teaches them to be appreciative, but it also teaches them that giving makes you feel happy. I remember going to the nursing homes for choir and singing to the residents and it was something that made me feel useful.
AR

Community service in an elementary classroom is a component that involves the entire classroom. Completing simple activities such as writing letters to our troops is a task that can introduce young children to serving their community. In my future classroom I definitely want to introduce my students to the importance of serving their community and giving back. This is an aspect I learned at a very young age and want to model this continuously. My class would do simple activities such as field trips to a nursing home, working with fellow classmates to send gifts for Christmas to less fortunate families and much more.

JS

Community service in an elementary classroom can look many different ways. Elementary schools have amazing resources to impact their community. Community service can be done as a school wide event, classroom event or even individually. I think giving students the opportunity to get involved at such a young age is awesome, but it is very hard to require outside activities for elementary age students because they can only do what their parents are willing to take them to. Also if community service is required for students it is no longer volunteer work, many students would be doing it just because they have to. However I do still think community service is very important and doing something small in the classroom like writing letters to the troops or having a non-required event on the weekend such as a habitat for humanity build would be very beneficial to the students.
LR

Community service in the elementary classroom should focus on students learning to appreciate their community which includes their peers, the school staff, the parents of other students, in addition to their own neighborhoods and families. This appreciation can be fueled by schoolw ide projects (planting treest in a park), by small classroom contributions (having recycling bins and understanding why), or even on their own when students focus on being a good student and treating their peers appropriately. Students have to learn how important it is to give to others and to help one's surroundings. If these values are instilled at an early age, students will then grow up and engage in community service because they enjoy and find the value in it rather than because they "have to." I want my students to appreciate their surroundings both physical surroundings and their people, I want them to know various ways of helping others, and I want them to understand how important it is to care about others and people. I want them to take charge of what they can do to help.
MH

Community Service in elementary school can be as simple as helping with recycling to cleaning up around the community as a group or classroom. I do think it is very important for my future classroom should be aware of how we can all help our community become better by helping each other out. To start I might do community service with my classroom as a whole as well as integrate a lesson whether it be math, music, physical education, or even science. I would explain to my classroom that community service is volunteering to help and show how much we care about our community. Another way would be to collaborate with other teachers or even the principle to start a school wide event for community service, that way the whole school is helping out and working for a good cause.
G.C.

For an arts integration project for my future classroom would be to collaborate with the art, music, and P.E. I would teach the concept by making the lesson a week long using either English, math, science, etc. Everyday we would add to the project with music or music and art. One example would be a science lesson on biomes and animals, using arts to create a map. The expected outcomes from the project would be to show that any subject can integrarte art, music, and P.E.
G.C.
