Elizabeth Cady Staton lived in a world that was full of slavery and full of women being suppressed. She saw this and decided to fight against it. She is quoted saying, "I would have girls regard themselves not as adjectives but as nouns."

Staton was a very talented writer, which would help her through out her fight. the writer of many published writings, she is also the writer of the Declaration of Sediments. Staton also fought against abolition and spoke out against it. She was the president of the National Woman Suffrage Association for 20 years and worked closely with another well known women's rights activist, Susan B. Anthony. It is very clear to see her passion through her quote," A government is just only when the whole people share equality in its protection and advantages."

Success in Promoting Reform

Staton got the conversation going when it came to women and equality. With Lucretia Mott and several other women, she organized the famous Seneca Falls Convention and wrote the Declaration of Sediments. This stated that men and women were equal. Even though no real change began, she propelled the movement and made it possible for women to gain rights in later years. Despite seeing no real changes, Staton still had confidence in her and other women. She has said, "The best protection any woman can have... is courage."

Staton is recognized in history for standing up and fighting for the issue that would be very difficult to solve and make her a target. One of the things about Staton that made her so famous was that she (as well as several other women) began the fight for women. This is important because this was the first time that the women's movement was "recognized" and had a formal title. She also went "against the grain" when it came to speaking out against the Bible. Biography.com states, "She had long argued that the Bible and organized religion played in denying women their full rights."
