The way that each "chapter" sets a scene to many stories intertwined with each other. Reading each piece felt like putting together a puzzle. The family is also very connected with each other, always together, making life work for the best.

Their experiences being lado-a-lado as family - and most specifically as sisters. They take care of each other. Paloma - looking out for Sofia - punching boys who hurt Sofia, and taking her away from situations that could hurt her - the babysitters visitor who showed his private part. Also, the silences that the girls keep with them. There are silences, and embodied stories that they keep locked away. I also noticed the symbolism of trees, gardens, mariposas and dreams. Dreams are woven through the entire book so far, and are carried into each vignette. The setting of this book is around the 70's, and I was thinking about the migra back then, I read that the migra would just stop people on the street, I haven't seen this is Austin because it is supposed to be. safe place for immigrants. But I would also run if someone screamed that the migra was coming.
2. I realize the struggles with language barriers, especially when chofi was In an elementary school that spoke only English and then moved to a school that spoke Spanish. One sad truth that really spoke to me was on page 25 were Paloma and Chofi were scared to tell their mom about what had happened when they were little. This spoke to me because it's a fear I live with everyday, being a teenage girl in this world and being scared to just walk down the street is so sad. Nearly every woman in my family has been taken advantage of and hurt by sexual experiences that never should have happen. I loved the setting the book was in, however it scared me when they started talking about the migra.
