Why do you want to be a nurse? When did you decide you wanted to be a nurse? Did anyone or anything influence your decision?

I want to be a nurse because I have always had a passion for helping others and making a difference in people's lives. I decided to become a nurse in high school after volunteering at a special needs youth organization. Seeing the dedication of nurses and the comfort they offered to patients was deeply inspiring. One nurse in particular takes the time to explain things to patients and always shows kindness, even on the busiest days. He has influenced me more than you can imagine. His example has shown me that nursing is not just a job, but a calling to care for, support, and advocate for people in their most vulnerable moments. That experience has strengthened my decision to pursue this career. I also believe that every patient deserves care, dignity, and respect, and I want to be that person who makes a difference in their recovery and well-being. I want to be a trusting figure, who listens and who guides people toward healing, both physically and emotionally.

Do you want me to bring you something to distract you? A book or some colors?

Marco: Do you have anything on dinosaurs?

Luca: Of course!

Marco: My favorite is the T-Rex. Luca: Excellent choice.

Mom: Marco would like to be a soccer player when he grows up, you know?

Marco: I'd like to get back on the field first.

Luca: Done deal.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your family, and your community from serious diseases. Vaccines are safe, carefully tested, and help your body build natural defenses without making you sick. They not only protect you but also those around you, especially people who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons.

By staying up to date with recommended vaccines—such as those for measles, influenza, COVID-19, and HPV—you reduce the risk of outbreaks and help keep hospitals less crowded. Vaccination also helps prevent long-term complications from diseases that can have serious or even fatal outcomes.

Talk to your doctor or local health clinic to check if your immunizations are current. Getting vaccinated is a simple, responsible step that saves lives. Protect your health and the health of others—vaccinate today for a healthier tomorrow.

Prevention is always better than cure. Your health matters.

How did you feel about your first rotation? What ward were you in? You should speak for 1 minute or write 150 words.

My first rotation was in the neonatal surgery ward, and it was a truly unforgettable experience. At the beginning, I mostly observed and helped with basic tasks, since everything was so new and delicate. I was a bit nervous, especially because I was working with very small and fragile patients. However, the team was supportive and gradually started involving me more.

As time went on, I was given the opportunity to try new procedures under supervision—like assisting during dressing changes, preparing instruments, and even helping monitor vital signs. It was amazing to see how tiny surgical techniques can make such a big difference in a newborn’s life.

This rotation taught me not only clinical skills but also the importance of patience, precision, and teamwork. I felt proud to be part of a team that gave such specialized care to the most vulnerable patients. It definitely strengthened my desire to become a skilled and compassionate nurse.

Volunteering with Vulnerable Populations

I completed my volunteer hours at Montana Rescue Mission, a faith-based organization in Billings that provides shelter, meals, and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness. The mission focuses on meeting both immediate needs, such as food and shelter, as well as long-term needs like recovery programs and stability. The primary population served includes homeless adults, many of whom struggle with mental health issues, substance use, and chronic health conditions.

During my time volunteering, I helped with basic tasks such as assisting with meal service, interacting with guests, and helping maintain a safe and welcoming environment. I had the opportunity to talk with several individuals and observed that many were dealing with complex challenges. These included lack of access to consistent healthcare, financial instability, and limited social support. Despite this, many individuals showed resilience and appreciation for the services provided.

Health disparities were very noticeable. Many individuals had unmanaged chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes due to inconsistent access to care. I also observed signs of mental health struggles, including depression and substance use disorders. Barriers such as lack of insurance, transportation, and stable housing made it difficult for them to seek and maintain treatment. These factors contribute to a cycle that is hard to break without outside support.

Community and public health nurses can play an important role in improving outcomes for this population by providing outreach, education, and screenings. Nurses can advocate for better access to healthcare services, mental health resources, and substance use treatment programs. They can also help connect individuals with community resources and support systems. On a larger scale, nurses can advocate for policy changes that address homelessness and healthcare inequality.

This experience helped me better understand how homelessness is not just a local issue but a national and global health concern. Vulnerable populations across the country face similar challenges related to poverty, lack of access to care, and mental health issues. My experience at Montana Rescue Mission reinforced the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care and the need for systemic changes to improve health outcomes for these populations.
