  • It began with choosing between Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson for President 
  • Federalist supporters called Jefferson an atheist, a fanatic in politics, and a drunkard  
  • Jefferson's supporters called Adams a monarchist who longed to reunite with Britain
    • He was also accused of sharing mistresses with a General which he replied with, "I do declare if this be true, General Pinckey has kept them all for himself and cheated me out of my two." 
  • Jefferson and Burr ended up with the same amounts of electoral votes which then put it in the hands of the House of Representatives
  • As time passed both Virginia and Pennsylvania readied their militias but then Jefferson was chosen to become the new President

  • The term was commonly used to refer to the Democratic-Republican Party, which Jefferson founded in opposition to the Federalist Party of Alexander Hamilton.
  •  The Jeffersonians were deeply committed to Republicanism in the United States
    • Opposition to aristocracy of any form, opposition to corruption, insistence on virtue, with a priority for the ordinary people.
    • Opposition to the aristocratic elitism of merchants, bankers and manufacturers, distrusted factory workers, and were on the watch for supporters of the dreaded British system of government. 
  • Jeffersonian democracy persisted as an element of the Democratic Party into the early 20th century.
