Post #1 (September 13, 2019)- rent control and homelessness in california

This article is relevant because it discusses the effects of gentrification, which was a topic we discussed in class and how it mainly effects minorities and how it is part of the development process. For example, the minority ruled neighborhood of Boyle Heights in LA was gentrified and the rent jumped by more than 40% since 2016, thus increasing the nationwide social issue of homelessness and further displacing minorities. This action of the State Government intervening by imposing rent caps relates to Keynes theories that this will help the state economically by doing so socially.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/11/business/economy/california-rent-control.html

In this New York Times article, they discuss Senator Cory Booker's proposal to eradicate childhood poverty by offering $300 monthly cash allowance to poverty stricken families. This relates to the U.N.'s 17 sustainable development goals we discussed in class. Cory Booker states that this proposal will help 7.3 million children escape poverty in the U.S. This is a substantial statistic that will have a domino effect and improve the health of children as well as the quality of education they will receive which is are all increasingly concerning domestic social issues in the U.S.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/03/us/politics/cory-booker-child-poverty.html

This New York times article is relevant to this class because most of these global businesses were founded in the U.S and are seen as sympathizing with the Chinese communist party to keep their businesses there. We have discussed in class how foreign businesses move into a country that's culturally and politically vastly different and exploit the people there. The protesters are making a stand and voicing their human rights concerns.

This article discusses how the "third pillar" of society is ignored, or rather neglected. This article examines how often communities are left on the back burner of politicians and corporations. This article relates to topics we discussed in class how businesses and large corporations have a social duty to offer benefits to it's workers and take care of them and the social responsibility of such giants. Communities are often ignored, so the pockets of the wealthy overflow. The article also talks about how todays businesses are impersonal and states “Relationships seem to be stronger when the members of the community have fewer alternatives, for it gives the members confidence that they will stay mutually committed.” This implies that there are negatives to such modern model.

This article relates to the topic we discuss in class related to the standard the growing inequality that capitalism creates and how financialization peoples such inequalities by being anti-union, and wanting to make as much profits as possible even at he expense of their employees. This relates to the growing homeless population and concern n the U.S as well because they can't earn enough money to pay for basic necessities. Also the topic of the rise in housing costs relate to this article because the workers need better and higher wages to keep them in their homes and their communities.

Post #8 (November 14, 2019) Global Cultural Appropriation of Mexican Embroidery

This article discusses how these indigenous practice of embroidery is plagiarised by huge corporations and high end world known designers. This appropriation discredits the indigenous peoples work and tradition which relates to the dilution of cultures as globalization spreads. Also the migration of people from this village to the U.S is caused by immense poverty which causes further loss of culture as it is less practice in the younger generations. Often times the market low balls the artist because the people that copy and steal their cultural artwork is sold for less, which further impoverishes the population.

Post #9 (November 22, 2019) Current Covert Racism in Amerikkka

This article relates to the discussion we had in class this week about how race and racial identity is an important factor in peoples daily lives, especially with Americas long history of racism, segregation, and of course slavery that has had long generational ramifcatons that keep black people and minorities far behind in every aspect of life. The people that are effected by this can't just "get over it" because slavery happened so long ago as one student with a red hat was so eager to comment. That fact of the matter is, is that "Large and persistent racial gaps in housing and employment are a fact of American life... A good deal of this is the long overhang of past discrimination, the legacy of Jim Crow and redlining and urban renewal and the deliberate neglect of communities of color by authorities at all levels of government." Just because white people don't experience this, doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and shouldn't be discredited.

This article relates to the readings we had this week as well as our discussion on the importance of the U.N and its different purposes. The U.N is needed to shed light on serious humanity issues between countries and within countries, also the fear of the U.N stepping in is what stops some countries from going completely chaotic. A quote from the article states "“If the U.N. doesn’t speak about it, who is going to speak about it?” Mr. Khan [Pakistan's prime minister] said. The intervention is needed so tensions won't be further escalated between India and Pakistan which are both holders of nuclear weapons.
