Since the New York Colony had such a diverse population, there was a large mix of religions that were practiced. They had considerable religious freedom. Those that were considered Christians went to churches similar to those of modern-day churches. The religious groups of the New York Colony were separated into different areas based on geography. The Dutch Reformed Church was located near the Hudson River Valley, where the Dutch had settled. West of Albany, near the Mohawk River, were the Lutherans and German Reformed Church. More common people were able to participate in elections, political, meetings and have their voice heard. 
New York was run by a governor approved by the King of England. This governor made all the laws and decisions. The colony was able to gain a little freedom which included electing their mayor, but this freedom did not last long. The first royal governor of New York was Sir Edmund Andros. He ruled without a legislature which caused dissension and complaint throughout the town. 
By 1664, King Charles II gave a proprietary of the colony to The Duke of York, the future King James II. The New York Colony was even referred to as a Breadbasket colony. Wheat was ground into flour and exported to England. Most colonists were farmers that cleared many acres of land to make space for these farms to grow everything listed. Manufacturing was mainly focused on iron ore products. He is famous for the purchase of Manhattan Island, which is now the center of New York City. He purchased for the rich and abundant land that can be used for farming, and because it was surrounded by water. 
In 1625, Peter Minuit left his hometown Wesel, to avoid the Spanish Catholic colonial who occupied Wesel. He sailed to the Dutch colony of New Netherland of Holland and returned in the same year.
