In my opinion, I think that culturally responsive teaching means that recognizes the importance of including students cultural references and its background or identity of each student. I would like to discuss about cultural background in my classroom and how to make them feel equally included in the classroom no matter what race or identity they have. I also, feel like discussing this topic more closely in-depth to know the different ideas and concepts and in the future I would know what to do when it will pertain in my future classroom. As we read the article "Creating Community in your Classroom" I want my students to feel accepted and feel safe in the classroom environment, and feel comfortable talking with the teacher. Reading the article I want to build a community as well in my future classroom.
- Adriana Davila

I also believe it entails teaching other students about different cultures. I would like to discuss how you would start including different cultures into your classroom and what is the appropriate way to do so that makes sense with what everyone is learning. I also would like to be able to discuss cultural responsive teaching more in-depth as it is a very important topic and there will always be students of different cultures in classroom. I want to make sure my students always feel welcome in my classroom and create a positive environment.

--Sophie Metee

Culturally responsive teaching is an important aspect that all classrooms should prioritize as it creates unity and sets students up for future success. The earlier we teach students to work with and appreciate all cultures the better. This can be done my teaching students about the differences and similarities in every culture around the world and by illustrating things like traditions, language and even music. I would like to discuss how to decide what cultures to teach about and how to avoid offending any students that may be part of that culture.

- Camila Kelly

Somethings I would like to know or discuss about this topic for my future classroom is how to incorporate more cultures into the lesson. I think culturally responsive teaching is important because it helps maintain an inclusive classroom. For example, I come from an Egyptian background and whenever I learned about it in school, I always felt included and appreciated. By addressing other cultures within the classroom, I believe it makes students feel accepted and a part of the classroom. My goal for my classroom is to have a open and accepting classroom and culturally responsive teaching is a main aspect.

-Deena Elwi

Culturally responsive teaching is teaching where the teacher acknowledges all of the different cultures that are in their classroom and their community. The teacher is aware that not everyone has the same beliefs, customs, or views, and their curriculum reflects that. The teacher also makes sure to teach history and other topics from multiple perspectives so that children from all cultures feel respected and accepted. In my future classroom, I will not celebrate holidays, but we will celebrate seasons. Students may not all celebrate the same holidays and I would not want any child to feel uncomfortable in my classroom. I can also make sure that we do a cultural project at the beginning of the year so that I am aware of all of my students' backgrounds.
-Chandler Smith

Culturally Responsive..
I believe that in order to be culturally Responsive it can be somewhat difficult for some teachers and parents because of our indirect and direct marginalizations of sexes and cultures embedded within our society and in our upbringing. Some teachers may not know they are actually educating themes in students of appropriation and discrimination. Hollywood in general falsifies the way we see each other. Many times in the United States we want the Disney story Pocahontas, Coco or whatever, because it's beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. What we don't want is the rest that goes with a particular culture, the marginalization, the language barriers, the false sense of self, their lost historical identity.

In my classroom we would never watch any Hollywood cartoon pictures or movies. This does not mean we won't watch any movies. I would choose not to re enact, war or anything dehumanizing. I would encourage specifics like North and South America not America only. I'd be careful to have them understand when choosing non-inclusive terms like Hispanic. They will understand that the world is a large place and that diversity is not limited to the language in power of a specific region or country.

-A.G.

In my classroom, I would make sure that the books I am reading or anything played on a screen is multicultural and not always the same type of characters. I think it is important to not only pay attention to race, but also all the other types of culture around many things which might include bigger things like gender, identity, background, or even smaller things like hobbies. There are so many different cultures to pay attention to, and being a culturally responsive teacher means to include them in your everyday classroom.
-B.H.

Cultural responsive teaching is when a teacher is aware of the different cultures in a classroom setting. This is significant because everyone grows up differently. Each student comes from different cultures, values, morals, beliefs and more. Therefore, as future teachers, it is important to teach students at an early age that there are many different cultures and how students can appreciate the different types. Also, as a teacher, it is important to be aware of the students cultural background so that no student feels left out and everyone feels comfortable and appreciated in the classroom. One way a teacher can implement cultures is by having a project and having students discuss their cultural backgrounds. Then, at the end, have a gallery walk and have students read and learn about their classmates cultural background. I believe creating this cultural environment is significant because it makes students feel more welcomed and also allows each student to know one another. I believe is beneficial for both the teacher and the students because it creates a positive environment and it builds a bond with everyone.
-Verna Hiedo

There will be many students with different race, ethnicity, culture, tradition, customs, and etc that will enter our classroom setting, so it is important to be familiar with all of it. We need to be familiar because we need to have the ability to teach different cultures so all students feel welcomed. If we talk about one common culture and not any others, I think that students will feel like they are different and thats not okay. One thing I would like to know is how to go about introducing cultures? When is it the right time? I want my students to get to know all the cultures around the world through a positive environment. In my future classroom I will be culturally responsive by having my classroom participate in a multi-cultural fair, or studying different cultures instead of focusing on one all year long. Including different cultures in lesson plans will help my students feel more welcome and comfortable accepting their differences. Another way I can be culturally responsive is by having my students complete an "All About Me" project, in which they can talk about their culture and what makes them unique. Having them share to the class will be a great way for the rest of the class to learn about other cultures maybe they had never heard about, but will also let them get to know their classmates in a better way.

Victoria Lopez

In order to be labeled a culturally responsive teacher it is key that you know ALL your students. Knowing your students does not mean successfully taking roll call without peeking at the roster, but to know their background, community, and home. Culturally Responsive Teaching is defined as “using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and performance styles of diverse students to make learning more appropriate and effective for them” (ppc.edu). Culturally Responsive Teaching is beneficial for both the student and the teacher. By knowing your students outside the classroom, you now have access to tools that can help you build background knowledge inside the classroom. Being able to integrate different cultural behaviors in the class can lead to extended discussions between classmates. A culturally responsive teacher’s mission is to make new information relatable so it can be easier to retain.

-MO

I as a future instructor would incorporate it by teaching lessons and activities that relate for example about heroes from different ethnic backgrounds, different stories that demonstrate how they fought against hardship, we can even make in class activities that are well known in different parts of the world. Everyone should feel cared for, respected and included at all times, so we as a result have and build a nice community between us and prosper together. Students should never feel judged or bullied for having different beliefs, dressing differently or being part of different cultures. For instance, we can learn about Martin Luther King’s story as well as Cesar Chaves’ and the different presidents of the United States. We can as a class work assignment work on arts in craft activities like making papel picado and many other diverse activities. We can watch movies or read books that relate to different events and people that significantly made a change in the life we live today.
MM -Marisela Mungia

Culturally responsive teacher forces a teacher to understand each one of their students cultural backgrounds, and accepting them into the classroom. This means more than just knowing where they come from, but fully embracing how their background can better their learning environment and their peers. I would like to know what processes culturally responsive teachers have in order to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, are feeling accepted in their classrooms.
-MP

Culturally responsive teaching is when a teacher is inclusive. The teacher should be responsible for caring about the differences that each student may have. Those differences make every student unique and special. Teachers must respect and embrace different cultures and students’ traits in order to create a safe and happy environment. Before starting a school year, I would like to know certain details of my future class in that way I can adapt myself to any circumstance and make my students feel welcome and safe.

Culturally responsive teaching is defined as a pedagogy that recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning. It is important to respect and include cultural diversity in the classroom. Even going above and beyond with this and fully embracing different cultural backgrounds can help students feel more comfortable and embraced with their teacher and peers. I would like to have more specific examples/ideas for a frame of reference that I could use in my own classroom some day.
-K.B.

Culturally responsive teaching is teaching in a multi-cultural setting. Teachers use this method to encourage each student to relate course content to his or her cultural background. I am very excited to use this style of teaching in my future classroom because a BIG goal for myself is to make my classroom feel like a safe and accepting place for every person that walks through the door.
I would love to know more about how to actually go about this type of teaching. To have examples of activities or lessons to incorporate all cultures in my classroom would be very helpful.
-SC

Culturally responsive teaching is recognizing and embracing that different students come from different backgrounds. I believe it is important to not get stuck into focusing on one single world view. If we as educators ignore what some students are accustomed to, they can both feel alienated and actually be bullied by their fellow students for being different. I would like to learn how to make different cultures seem completely normal to students that don't come into contact with them. Yes, we can learn about other cultures in class, but would the students feel normalized to them or would they feel like we are learning about aliens on mars? Students need to accept and love their peers that grew up differently than them.
-ZJ

Teaching requires you to be culturally responsive towards all students in your classroom. It means that as a teacher you need to incorporate all students backgrounds and cultures while teaching. It also makes the teacher learn about each student and get to know each student on a personal level, which isn’t a bad thing at all. It is also respecting all students and where they come from. I suppose one question I have is sometimes how can you include all students backgrounds, for example in a math lesson?
NS

"Culturally Responsive Teaching is a pedagogy that recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning"

This is important because as educators we need to realize our students come from different backgrounds and have all had different experiences. Which means they will all learn in different ways and at different paces. We need to modify our lessons when it comes to curriculum and overall life lessons to be relatable to our students. The only way students will ever learn is if they truly understand what you're teaching and the only way they will understand is if they can make real life connections to what they're learning in school. Culturally relevant teaching also focuses on knowing cultural norms and forms of respect so that students feel comfortable and valued in our classrooms. I would like to know if there is a short go to handbook that gives a brief backround of various culturals and how to interact with different types of students.
Rachel McArdle

Cultural responsive is crucial to every teaching aspect in schools. Different countries and parts of the world teach differently, and some students may have a hard time adapting to any new place they may enter. This also lets us understand the wide range of teaching and cultures that we as future teachers will face. If there was something I wanted to discuss, it would be relating to how we can manage or edit our ways of teaching to new students, especially those coming from other countries, to adapt to our understanding of education here in the U.S.

-Christian Monge
