Currently, I am one of seven counselors at a 6-A high school (4,000+ students), and in December I expect to complete my Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling degree. Although I already have a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, pursuing this current degree has allowed me to solidify my personal and professional goal as a counselor.

Bullying is an act where, most often, more than one person knows it is happening to a victim, and it continues until the victim finds a way to remove himself or herself, the bully is removed, or there is a catastrophic conclusion to the bullying. The act of bullying stems from something/somewhere within that person, but victimization is put upon a person and should not diminish or end that person's life.

The Top 5 Legal and Ethical Issues in Secondary Education Revealed (Option 1)

The day before school started, I sat down with Mrs. Straw, Associate Principal of Instructional Services, and asked her to identify the top five legal and ethical issues at the secondary level. Mrs. Straw (personal communication, August 19, 2018) provided the following details:

1. Staffing and class size. Legal - serving special populations. Ethical - serving all students.
2. Counselor-to-student ratio. Legal - providing the required services to all students. Ethical - depth of service provided versus meeting the requirement.
3. School safety. Legal/ethical - being responsible for taking care of students/children.
4. Bullying and meeting the social/emotional needs of all students. Legal/ethical - similar to school safety, but includes mental health and internal concerns.
5. Appropriate student/teacher relationships. Legal - teacher training, policies and procedures for prevention. Ethical - ensuring students and teachers are provided appropriate mentors and support.

These are all priorities and on-going concerns, explaining each issue has individual components to address while also interrelated (J. Straw, personal communication, August 19, 2018).

More than 70% of students indicated seeing bullying in schools when surveyed (StopBullying.gov, n.d.). Students who worry about their safety cannot focus on academics or consider social activities in a positive light. This outlook makes bullying an important topic for educators, schools, and families. Taylor Zank's "Imma Listen" song was inspired by his personal experiences of being bullied, how a teacher saw his pain, and made a difference (PACER.org, 2018). Another story of loneliness caused by bullying came from Kelly O'Loughlin's parents, noting that she had to drop out of school from the persistent bullying (PACER.org, 2018).

Lawsuits filed against school districts claiming bullying led to a child’s suicide have been unsuccessful (Poland and Lieberman, 2018). However, the loss of life and the legal cases remind districts to consistently re-evaluate prevention plans, training, and current practices to determine whether or not they still meet the needs of the students they serve.

Learning that only 30%-43% of students who are bullied tell an adult (StopBullying.gov, n.d.; PACER.org, 2018) means many have suffered in silence and will remember that pain forever. In my work as a counselor today and in the future, I have to take the time for what is important: small groups, getting into classrooms and having character discussions, building kids up, working with teachers on prevention and intervention strategies (StopBullying.gov, n.d.), and being present for students. Further research is needed to determine which methods may best work for our community, but more than half the time, "when bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds" (StopBullying.gov, n.d.). We all have at least that much time to show someone we care.
