Urbanisation 21/4/20

ACTIVITY 1
Australia is one of the most urbanised nations. 90 percent of the population are living in just 0.22 per cent of the country's land area and 85 percent are living within 50 kilometers off the coast. The largest city in Australia (population) is Sydney and the largest city in the USA (population) is New york city. The population of Sydney is 5.23 million and the population of NYC is 19.5 million. The largest city in Australia (area) is Western Australia. The bigger cities in the USA and Australia both have big cities, but also a fair bit of rural land. The population of Alaska is 731,545 and the population of WA is 2.589 million. In Australia and the USA, people are gravitated towards the coastline. It is more popular in the USA to live inland, but the coastlines are the most popular. People enjoy living on coastlines because they are close to beaches, bigger cities etc. In Australia, the population is very gravitated towards the coastline, particularly the east and west coast. In the USA, the population is more evenly distributed, with a fair amount of big cities and states along the coastline and the inland.

ACTIVITY 2
Pick a country that you are interested in and answer the following questions using Our World in Data:

Access to electricity, urban vs. rural

City population

Do more people live in urban or rural areas?

Is your country more (blue) or less (green) densely populated than Earth's average population density?

Number of people living in the capital city

Number of people living in urban and rural areas UN (1960 to 2017)

Number of people living in urban slum households (why do you think this is?)

Melbourne is full of lots of great schools (universities, high school, primary schools), restaurants, plenty of lane ways filled with cafes, galleries, museums and most importantly lots of culture and acceptance.

Economic facts (businesses, jobs etc) Melbourne is a great place to find a job, and it isn't that hard. there are many different fields of employment you can choose from in Melbourne, and also not too much stress on full time, half time etc jobs.

Environmental (drinking water, trees, air quality) Melbourne's has clean air quality and doesn't suffer from high levels of air pollution that are common to other major cities around the world. There is also great access to clean drinking water, in your home and also drink taps around the city.

- Venice Example: Explain why this demonstrates a lack of understanding about accessibility?

When the Venice bridge was built, accessibility was obviously out of the picture, and the bridge was more about design. For people with disabilities, this bridge was impossible to cross, and to get a cable car across the bridge cost money. It isn’t fair that people should have to pay money just because they can’t cross the bridge due to their disabilities.

- What are some of the small examples that Stephen Cluskey gives about accessibility?

Stephan is in a wheelchair himself, and has dealt with problems with accessibility. He says that once he had to wait 6 hours for a taxi that catered to his disability. He said that this isn’t right, and it’s should be fair for people with disabilities.

- Outline – what is universal design?

A universal design is a design of a building that is catered for everyone and their needs. This includes things like ramps, elevators, escalators, etc.

- Brainstorm some ways cities could include universal design?

* When building a design, take into consideration all peoples needs

* Having votes and people’s opinion on what should happen to improve accessibility

‘An accessible is an inclusive world’

1) They demonstrated a lack of understanding about accessibility because they designed the bridge poorly. They had stairs and it was quite steep and slippery which would have been an issue for accessibility.
2) One of the examples he stated about accessibility was that he couldn’t get into a pub and not only did they loose his business but they lost 15 other peoples business.
3) I think universal design is when they design something while thinking about people universally.
4) Like he said cities could fix taxis so that people who are in a wheelchair could access one easier. Cities could also add ramps to every store so that all people can access them.
