At a school I subbed at, they had just about every class teaching in both Spanish and English. And each classroom was themed to a different country that the students would learn and study facts about throughout the school year.

I know that being bilingual can be difficult as often time, kids need to translate the new information back into their primary language in order to fully grasp what they are being taught.

I just remember being in Spanish class in high school for my foreign language credit. I tried to learn French wit Duolingo on my own before I went to France for spring break a few months ago.

Here is an interesting school I had a chance to work in. They use the Grapeseed program to facillitate "international" education. The children here have a high English level compared to other kindergartens offering English curricula.

The extent of what I know is just what we've been learning from this class. All I know is that there is a dual immersion school for English and Spanish in my school district for elementary and middle school. The AV overall is under Title 1 though so I'm not sure if a dual immersion school exists on the high school level. As far as I knew, there wasn't.

I have not worked with ELL students myself, but I have been able to observe another teacher do so. I would have done many things differently than that teacher. This student came from Israel in November of last year and has experienced things that no other child at this school has experienced. I believe that, mixed with having to learn a new language must have been very hard for a young child.

The school I work is unique in that we support two ELD programs. One is our traditional support in ELD classes and the other is how we support our students who are in our TWBI program.

In my early elementary years, I remember classmates getting pulled out for ELD and at the time I didn't understand what it was. Now that I am an educator I can see how important it is to have designated ELD time for the students and their language development.

I personally don't know much about bilingual education. I was blessed to experience it but witnessed how my younger siblings are not fluent in Spanish due to the banning of bilingual education (back then).

I was in a bilingual class for grades K-2, but the program was discontinued. I'm not sure about the current programs.

For secondary education, I think it's important to give 1-1 support for a student if they are mainstreaming. There is a 10th grader who is mainstreamed but is struggling in his classes. A teacher tries to help when she is free and able to do so, but i think a 1-1 support of translating captioning service would be beniffitial.

It's nerve-wracking in a sense because we may not know the language. Or able to properly communicate the curriculum to these kids. My personal experience was hard because I couldn't understand the child. He would look so bored cause he didn't understand much besides math. Some kids knew Spanish so they would help but it was a difficult journey for me. I don't know much Spanish so I would practice on Duolingo but I would get nervous speaking.

A lot of people have a negative connotation about learning two languages at the same time, but I disagree with that. I think it can be really beneficial towards language development

In my own experience I have not been in a class where my peers are ELLs, etc. Now as an adult whose partner/partner's family are ELLs, I understand their experience in a whole new way. I am learning Spanish through the immersion of communicating with my boyfriend, Duolingo, talking with my own mother in Spanish.

I know many districts in California have Dual Language Immersion Programs. Many of the students that I work with are in this program. I also realized students don't have to join their home language program. I know a Hispanic student who's in the Korean DLI program!! TRILINGUAL!

My personal experience with bilingual education is through seeing my mother take night classes to learn English, and observing my aunt teach English in Mexico to her 4th grade class. Through these experiences, I realized how difficult it is for students to learn without having extra visuals available.

Working in a middle school setting I often see how bilingual students struggle to fully understand what is going on in the classroom. It sometimes can be difficult when a teacher does not speak Spanish to help those students that are ELL. The charter school I currently work at also uses Lexia program to help ELL.

I tutored a 10 year old girl who had moved here from China several years back when I was at UCI. I did not have experience with ELs & was honest about that going in but they still wanted me to work with her, so I did... I ended up learning a lot! This helped me realize we need to realize the different levels they are at, what different concepts they can understand, etc. There were times I used Google Translate for things that worked a little bit...other than that I don't have other experience but the Learning Strategies was super interesting to read!

I am working with an ELL student, he has hearing loss and very limited language, home language is Spanish. He is very motivated to develop English and tries very hard. Unfortunately, he is struggling to comprehending material in all subjects.

Working with 8th-grade English learners, being recent newcomers, is a challenge. My students have only been here 1-2 years and are behind in math and English. My program and being the only Spanish-speaking teacher at the grade level take a lot of changing and translating lessons. What is trickier is not knowing their reading levels because the teacher can not assess them one on one because she is teaching the rest of the class, and the language barrier. Whenever I have the chance to work with them, translating the academic language and terms for them to use and conquer is the most challenging part.
