The three educators I interviewed came to similar consensuses. That collaboration is coming together, brainstorming and working together in order to achieve a common goal. My principal also noted that all schools need collaboration with both school professionals and parents in order to provide the best learning environment for all children. A veteran teacher also noted that some potential barriers for collaboration are time, differences in communication styles, and differences in opinions and teaching styles.

Co-teaching

The common response among all three educators was that in order to be successful co-teachers must both take full ownership for the classroom (including; data, behaviors, and culture). All educators interviewed believed that there are many benefits to co-teaching. Among them was that the teachers could focus on individual academic attention. Teachers may also play off each other’s strengths and weaknesses. However, a potential barrier could come into play if there is miscommunication among teachers or if they don’t get along. In order for effective co-teaching to occur it is necessary to have adequate space, differentiated materials and sensory materials. Co-teaching relies heavily upon two teachers coming together to form one team in order to achieve high rates of student growth.

The common response among each professional was that in order for consultation to happen in schools there must be a professional at the school with a vast knowledge of the desired topic. Due to the fact that I work at a school that is in its fifth year of its charter, we don’t have the greatest range of expertise because most of our administrators and educators are relatively new to their positions.

All educators interviewed agree that we are all working towards one goal, student achievement. Collaboration, co-teaching and consultation all play an important role in student success and it is imperative that school professionals give students the best tools and information they need to be successful. Our school uses Professional Learning Communities (PLC) which achieves better results for the students we serve through teacher collaboration and collective inquiry.
