As a Physical Education teacher the Quality-Plus Teaching Strategies that I currently use are 1.) Modeling and Practice - it is important to demonstrate the skill that students are expected to be able to do and then have them practice. 2.) Background Knowledge - allows student to relate what they already know or have seen with the concept they are learning. 3.) Student Goal Setting - what do they know now, what can they do now, how can they improve and what will it take to get there. The Fitness Gram Assessment is an example of how we take their present data and make goals for improving.

What I would like to practice more of is the use of comparing and contrasting - student need to understand how to think through the similarities and differences of concept and situations and their results.

I currently use the following Quality Plus Teaching Strategies:
1) Problem Solving: Math is all about problem solving and I encourage my students to solve problems in whatever ways work for them. We talk about different ways to solve the same problem.
2) Technology: We use QR codes, online games like Kahoot, and eClass within lessons.
3) Questioning: I am constantly posing questions to the class, both questions that they (should) know the answers to as well as questions that make them think. I also strive to consistently ask questions one on one with students when helping them. I want them to do all of the work themselves by answering the questions - getting away from the learned helplessness.
4) Modeling and Practice: I do, We do, You do is an everyday occurrence in my classes. Student hear my thought process and follow my thinking as we work problems together.
5) Collaboration: My students sit in table groups of 4. The students most work with a partner or in their small table group. I encourage peer teaching and help with questions before coming and asking me.

Quality Plus Teaching Strategies I would like to do more of:
1) Literacy: I would like to include literacy strategies more than just when we have word problems. Most of my students have low literacy and it makes the math word problems even more difficult.
2) Vocabulary: I would like to be better about using correct mathematical vocabulary instead of using synonyms or catchy words that they are used to and know.

In Step 1 I could use the new strategy Study Stack to review vocabulary online. Step 3 and work very well together in Math classes. Modeling thinking and Guided Practice go hand in hand when showing students new math concepts and practicing others. This works especially well with word problems. I agree with Shackelford, Step 5 - Adjustment to Instruction, is something that all teachers do in between class periods and even multiple times throughout a class period.

The two instructional strategies that I would have to say are my greatest strengths are Modeling and Practice and teaching complex content vocabulary words to the students. I have realized over my lifetime that the majority of the people that I have come into contact with are visual learners and may not understand instructions that are given to them without SEEING the instructor, model the lesson for them. Once the student understands how to do an assignment, then the student will be confident to engage in independent practice and can be assessed by the instructor in an effective manner. With respect to teaching complex content vocabulary words to the students, I believe that I do an excellent job in breaking down words so that the students can understand what they are generally reading. I think that the number one reason why students do not do well on standardized testing is that the students do not understand what the question is asking them; the students don't understand the language of the standards and the questioning that is placed in front of them and this leads to an overwhelming feeling. It's essential for teachers to focus on teaching the language of the standards to their students.

I believe that areas that I need to work on are collaboration and problem solving strategies. While I lesson plan for and implement collaboration in my classroom, I spend a lot of time assessing myself and how effective lessons truly are and how they are administered to the students. To do this, I poll my students to see what works and what doesn't and usually my students tell me that they don't like the collaboration piece of learning in the classroom because of two factors: 1) they truly feel that they do not learn as much from their peers as they would from the teacher and 2) they, for the most part, have concerns about whether or not their peers are contributing their fair share of research and work to the overall final project. I have been responsive to the concerns of the majority of my students and have used collaboration sparingly.
With respect to problem-solving strategies, I truly believe that something that I need to research and work on in my classroom.

One of my greatest strengths with teaching and learning is the way I provide practice for my students. This strategy alone helps them to develop into the type of learner for life. It also provides them with lots of ways to learn and to fit their needs individually. One area in which I would love to grow stronger and I am working on improving is Summarizing. In doing so, I am beginning to ask higher order questions for feedback and also add them to formal and informal assessments by providing a community of online learners through discussion boards.
