I believe that the group 4 project encourages interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration. Students are encouraged to apply scientific skills using a systematic approach to investigate on a topic. During the process, they will discover and learn to tap into one another's strengths, hence experiencing first-hand the value of having a team of members with different backgrounds.

Recently on the topic of the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, we explored examples that we know of in the Asian-Pacific region, as well as from Hollywood. Therefore, through these discussions and sharing of examples, we discover similarities and differences between people across geographical regions and cultures.

How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

I think it is important that students are given the opportunity to develop their critical thinking. For example, the hottest topic of today is different countries' policy against COVID-19. While teaching the topic on infectious diseases, some lesson time may be allocated for students to discuss the effectiveness of policies taken by each country, with the teacher emphasizing on the need for objectivity in the discussions.

When I teach my students on the topic of excretion and the function of the kidneys, we talked about organ donation and illegal organ trade. Students realise that the black market extends beyond borders and how the existing disparity between the wealthy and the poor is one of the key drivers for the sustainability of this trade. Along the way, I managed to elicit from the students the importance of organ donations and how countries have different strategies to encourage their citizens to do their part.
