An ethical dilemma has been found in the school supplies that we think are non-toxic and safe for our children. According to a study conducted by the United States Public Interest Research Group Education Fund, a number of back to school products have been found to contain asbestos and benzene. Both asbestos and benzene are known carcinogens and they are being used in crayons and dry-erase markers by big name manufacturers that should be testing these products and making them safe for children. At this time no legal course has been taken, but the manufacturers are looking into the claims.
References
Chokshi, N.

After reading legal and ethical issues going on in our country and interviewing a current professional I have found myself to be extremly interested in David's Law. David's Law is interesting due to the fact that I have lost two students to suicide from bullying. I feel like this issue is going to continue to get worse and school counselors must be at the forefront of helping these students with any bullying issues that may arise.

In the article, Recognizing the Public Schools' Authority to Discipline Students' Off-Campus Cyberbullying of Classmates, the current problem of cyberbullying and suicide was confronted. As a teacher and future counselor this type of bullying is an extremely important part of my job. I have had two of my students in the past eight years commit suicide. I believe with new legislation such as, David's Law we can prevent some of these suicides from happening.
Many past legal cases have been brought to light when trying to decide if public schools have any rights to reprimand students that cyberbully while off-campus. The two most important cases that give schools the right to punish students that cyberbullying are Tinker and Fraser.
After reading the article, Third Circuit Court weighs in on conflicting cases involving off-campus online speech by students, the only way schools can legally reprimand a student for cyberbullying off-campus is if the behavior causes a disruption in the school environment. This is important for me as an educator because I have personally seen and heard students discuss cyberbullying that happened on Facebook or other social media that was a disruption in the classroom yet nothing was done about it. I feel like this is a big step in the future for our students, laws, schools, and social media. I am very interested to see what happens with new legislation in the future.
References
Patchin, J. W.
