How would you like owning a business and the government tells you what to do with it? How would you like the government telling you what choices to make in life? You wouldn’t like it, would you? Of course not! No one likes being told what they can and can not do. Well, that’s exactly what a smoking ban does: dictate to supposedly “free” American citizens what we can do and where. At some point, we need to realize that our freedoms are being stripped away little by little and take back our power to do what we want and when and where we want to do it. Who are the legislators or even my neighbors to tell me when I can smoke or where I can smoke? I can read the label and know that smoking is harmful. You can too. If you don’t like it, then go away from me. Why don’t we just ban non-smokers? That makes just as much sense as banning smokers. We as a country need to resist the crumbling of our rights to make choices and stand for our ability to smoke in public places!

  1. “Smoking bans are a reckless expansion of government and set a dangerous precedent” Amy Venable (Director of Americans for Prosperity). Business owners have property rights that allow them to determine whether smoking takes place on land they own. Why is the government intervening in a matter where they don’t belong?

2. Revenue is lost when smoking is banned. 26% of adults smoke. If 26% of adults smoke and are banned from certain establishments, then that 26% of money the restaurant could have made is gone. (www.health.gov)

3. Smoking isn’t as bad as the toxins produced by cars. “A single drive to work puts out more deadly fumes and toxins in the air that a smoker could possible do in one year” (“Smoking is good for you”). So, eventually you are killing everyone around you if you are driving a car much more rapidly than smokers. Let’s focus on real challenges.

1. You disturb other people and cause second-hand smoke. One hour in a smoking restaurant = 1 cig; 2 hours = 4 cigs (Charles Le Maistre, former president of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center)

Answer: Okay, well, they are disturbing the smokers by not smoking. If everyone would just choose to smoke, then we’d all be happy. It is just as much my right to choose to smoke as it is theirs. Why don’t they just decide to join me rather than whine about it? Why not ban non-smokers!?!

So, second-hand smoke can cause some issues for some people. However…studies have shown that second-hand smoke really does not have harmful effects if people will live healthy lives any way. Inhaling smoke for one hour can be cured by inhaling smoke-less air for one hour. If you decide to go somewhere that has a smoker, then be sure to go somewhere where there’s not one. Take responsibility for your own lungs; quit worrying about mine.

You might also say that the smell infiltrates hair, clothes, etc. That’s what soap and water are for. If you don’t have access to a shower or a washing machine, then don’t go around smokers.

Modern air conditioners can purify the air (A Note about Air Cleaning).

2. Aren’t you concerned about the health effects that smoking has on people?

Answer: Once again you are taking discounting the intelligence of the individual. People can read the warning labels on cigarettes. If they choose to torment their bodies with cigarettes, then that is their choice.

7-day lung cleanse is available at http://www.herbalcaredirect.com/Lung-Cleanse.html?gclid=CPPOld_NzYsCFSZJYAodFHj2BA if you are so worried about it

3. Smoking isn’t the TRUE cause of cancer.

“The British government is proposing to tax fatty foods and dairy products and force people to exercise; the French government is proposing to fine bar owners for serving more than a specified amount of alcohol to customers; and the Italian government has passed a law to restrict the amount of sugar served in cafes, with fine for employees who let anyone have an extra lump!” (“Health, Politics, or Profit by Joe Jackson). Does this sound like “freedom” to you? As soon as we allow the government to tell us what to do with our bodies and our property, we are allowing our rights to be taken away. We must make a united front – both smokers and non-smokers alike to support our rights to freedom and the pursuit of our individual happiness. Sure, smoking has ill effects, but think about the consequences of allowing the government to take hold of such a time as this. Your children could be required by law to exercise or eat less sugar. Can you imagine that? Smoking bans are just another way that the government is spinning their ability to control our lives. We must not let the government ban smoking in public places.
