2. My results Compared to the first hypothetical person

Compared to my life and family, this family emits less carbon. First of all, the are vegetarian, which means their contributions to carbon dioxide emissions is a lot lower. My family eats meat about every other meal. Second of all, they use public transportation because they most likely live in an urban area. My family can't really do that because we live in more of a rural area. It's not completely countryside, but we don't have any form of public transportation. However we do some things this family does. For example we do recycle and we rarely fly anywhere. The use of public transportation and being a vegetarian combine to have a lower amount of carbon emitted compared to my family.

Both hypothetical families live pretty different life styles compared to mine, but the first is a little more similar than the second family. For instance, the first family rarely eats out like my family and rarely flies. However, this family is much more different than mine. This family is vegetarian, which I am not. This family has solar panels and uses a wood stove which I also don't use and have. Plus they live in a one person apartment with 5 people in their family. I have four people in my family, but have a four bedroom detached house. This causes my family to emit more carbon into the atmosphere. Living in a one bedroom apartment, using solar panels, using a wood stove, being a vegetarian, etc. all combines to have a very low amount of carbon emitted.

3. Changes I could Make to Emit less

As for traveling, somethings I can do to emit less is drive smarter. By that I mean having correct air pressure in my tires. Having correct air pressure results in better gas mileage, cheaper maintenance costs, and smaller impact on the environment. Another thing I can do to have a smaller impact on the environment is, bike and walk more. If I am traveling a short distance, there is no point in driving there. I'm just emitting more carbon and walking/biking is better for you. Another change I could make around the house is making the switch to energy efficient light bulbs. Light bulbs like energy saving incandescent, 15w CFLs, and LEDs use less power, last longer and provide the same amount of light as traditional incandescent light bulbs. The last big change I could make is eat less meat and dairy products. Producing meat and dairy for consumption is one of the major factors in carbon emission.
