During the 1820s and the 1830s, he lived in Brooklyn and Long Island with his parents and eight other siblings. At the age of 17 in 1836, he began to work as a teacher and taught until 1841, where then he began to start a career as a journalist. During his years as a journalist, he founded the "Long-Islander" and the "Brooklyn Freeman".  He then began to develop a new tone of poetry as a journalist.
