(Her Mother was Aafje Schaft and Father Pieter Schaft.) From a young age, Hannie was discussing politics and social justice. This encourages her to pursue law and become a human rights lawyer. While studying at the University of law studies(1938), she became best friends with two Jewish girls. Which were Sonja Frenk and Philine Polak. This made her feel strongly about the actions against Jews. At the time, The Nazi Germans were invading the Netherlands in 1943, and the university students were required to sign a declaration of allegiance to the occupation including Hannie but she refuse and so did 80 percent of them. For refusing she couldn't continue her studies. So that summer of 1943 she moves with her parents and took her friends with her for hiding.

Her resistance activities during the time were an assassination of a Dutch Nazi police officer and a collaborator Willem Ragut. Hannie fired first and hit her target/Ragut in the back. Bonekamp was shot in the stomach by Ragut before killing him. After wounded Bonekamp fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterward and taken to a hospital. While in the hospital he gave Schaft's name and address to Dutch Nazi nurses feigning to be Resistance workers.

To force Schaft to confess, German authorities arrested her parents and sent them to the Vught concentration camp. The distress of this situation and her grief over Bonekamp's death forced Schaft to flee resistance work temporarily. Her parents were released after two months.

Upon recovery, Schaft dyed her hair black and wore glasses to hide her identity, and returned to Resistance work. She once again contributed to assassinations and sabotage, as well as courier work, and the transportation of illegal weapons, and the dissemination of illegal newspapers.

She was eventually arrested at a military checkpoint in Haarlem on 21 March 1945 while distributing the illegal communist newspaper (De Waarheid) she was finally known for the roots of (Because it was red) She was sent to Jail.

Schaft was executed by Dutch Nazi officials on 17 April 1945
She was shot dead. Before dead, 

Two men took her there and one-shot her at close range, only wounding her. She is said to have told her executioners: Ik schiet beter "I shoot better!", after which the other man delivered the final shot
