I used the app duolingo to practice some conversation. It has a new function where you can chat with a robot and can check up some unfamiliar vocabulary during the chat. Also, when not sure what to reply, the app can provide some selections for what to reply with.

I did four conversations today: welcome abroad/ a new look/ a new restaurant/ Maya’s art studio.

It involves some expression about greetings, like/ prefer, and some food

I have found it quite difficult to remember the german spelling of letters.

I found this video that is quite helpful - a nursery rhyme that is made up of german alphabet. It is quite long, and it lists the spelling of one letter and then many vocabulary that has that letter. This kind of repetition is very helpful.

I have been playing it before sleep, and maybe it can be a routine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_6QzHc2PPA

By far, the gender in german is the thing that troubles me the most.

I try to figure out some rules and found out this table in the sample ISR.

I printed this and read through it. It is quite helpful.

At least there are some rules! Not completely irregular.

My friends recommended this language exchange app called hellotalk. I found it quite helpful because I can attempt to post something in German and sometimes native speakers will see it and help me correct it. In return, I correct people’s post in Chinese. So far I have had 4 posts and I will make it a happy to post more. It is always nice to have some social elements in language learning!

Also somehow some of my apps (evenbrite and wish) on the phone are displayed in German. Trying to understand and guess the meaning for practical reasons has also been fun.

I started to review the normative, accusative and dative cases in German. I try to think about them more systematically and I found one website to be particularly helpful in bringing things together:

http://www.nthuleen.com/teach/grammar/nomakkdatexpl.html

Personal pronouns and possessive ones have also been tricky for me, so it is nice how this table brings them in as well

I used duolingo to do a few more practices:

acc. case/ intro/ food 1

Also, I had a few more duolingo robot generated conversation:

passport, please!/ the chic boutique/ pizza time!

I think duolingo is a very good complement to the course.

I tried it before but because there is not any grammatical explanation in it, it was not so helpful for me. Now that the teacher has explained the grammar rules, practicing them with such an interface as duolingo is quite pressure free and fun.
