When she invites Diana over for tea, Anne imagines herself as a proper hostess, eager to live out the elegant, grown-up role she has dreamed about. Her creativity and sense of drama turn an ordinary afternoon into something special — until her mistake with the currant wine brings her fantasy crashing into reality. Yet even then, Anne’s imaginative spirit remains an essential part of who she is, showing how deeply her dreams and creativity shape her identity, even when they lead to mischief.

In Chapter 16, friendship and belonging are very important themes. Anne feels so happy and proud to finally have a “bosom friend” in Diana, someone who truly cares about her. The tea party shows how much Anne wants to make Diana feel welcome and to prove she can host a proper, grown up gathering. When Diana’s mother forbids her from seeing Anne after the wine accident, Anne feels heartbroken and lonely again. This shows how deeply she values friendship and how much she wants to belong. Later, when the truth comes out and Diana is allowed to be friends with her again, Anne learns that real friendship can survive mistakes.
