While the building clearly requires some income it is not greatly used at present, thus the events space will be designed to attract users from a wider area, who will mainly arrive by car, causing noise, pollution and physical danger in the two narrow streets that flank the college.The residential component is large and will generate even more traffic and parking requirements. These again will increase emissions and pollution. There is a need for social housing in the area and it is not clear whether these new buildings will support that. At time when Manchester has already declared a Climate Emergency, and when pollution levels in the street have already been found to be disturbingly high,(research done by MMU and Whalley Range Climate Action Group and Local schools demonstrates this clearly) increasing carbon emissions even more through excessive construction and massive concrete use is highly inappropriate. In the wake of increasing awareness of respiratory diseases being linked to pollution government (both local and national) is committed to tackling air pollution in urban areas. It seems there are serious reservations from some users within the Muslim community also. In 2010 we were promised 'a swimming pool, a library and other amenities all open to the public in general'. Our local MP promised this in the local press. None of this came to being. Existing objections and complaints re: marquee activities have been ignored. We are being taken for a ride. Developers want us to give up our quality of life re: noise, air quality , local biodiversity and local character of the environment for private profit, with the money not even being used locally but funnelled to international, non-accountable investors. The way the property has been managed to date has not built trust or opened things up. I feel detached from the site.
