Symbol Discussion

In the Scarlet Ibis, one symbol is Doodle’s mahogany coffin. This symbol was brought to attention when Doodle was just born. In the story, the author stated, “He was born when I was six and was, from the outset, a disappointment” (416). This quote leads up to the symbol because it’s showing how hopeless Doodle’s family was. Most of them didn’t believe Doodle was going to survive. The symbol is then introduced with the quote, “Daddy had Mr. Heath, the carpenter, build a little mahogany coffin for him” (416). Doodle’s mahogany coffin is symbolic because it shows how he wasn’t a disappointment after all, and this is expressed later on.

Throughout the book, there are some hidden messages of the coffin. The first time that Doodle went to the barn, his brother showed that they made a coffin for him so when he came out of the womb they can put him in the coffin and bury him. Since Doodle lived, the coffin wasn’t very useful, so they kept it in the barn because they didn’t have anywhere to put it. They later went back to the barn, not to take the coffin, but to put the go-cart up. They put the cart right next to the coffin that Doodle’s brother was using to push him around. The coffin in the attic became a trophy, to show what Doodle has overcome in his life.
