The ancient Mediterranean world was ruled by the Roman Empire. The empire remained in control of this wide spread area from 296BCE – 631CE. The Romans conquered and ruled extensive amounts of land through their militaries advantages. The people were known for their fierce armies that could destroy towns easily but they would also negotiate with the people because they wanted to keep peace with neighbouring countries. Depending on where citizens came from, people spoke many languages in the ancient Mediterranean world. Popular languages at the time included: Galilee, Latin and Aramaic. These languages were vastly spread because the people who spoke the languages were well known and were important for trading goods. The people from Greek spoke Galilee which was a language most people knew because the Greeks were popular in trading, the Romans spoke Latin which was also a wide spread language and Aramaic was also a popular language in the eastern part of the Mediterranean world which was spoken by the Jews. The different cultures and ethnic groups in the ancient world consisted of Gentile Christians, Jews, Romans and others. These groups made life have a certain hierarchy. For example, the poor and wealthy made up certain aspects of life and where you came from was essential to daily life as well. Infrastructure available to the people at the time includes roads, bridges, boats and carriages to make transport of goods and people easier. As the Romans had advanced technology, they built roads long enough to connect cities to support trading and travel. The main cities and regions that were connected through the roads consisted of Rome, Corinth, Athens, Cairo and Sparta in the main regions of Greece, Rome, Alexandria and the Persian and Roman Empire. The cities were important due to their ability to trade goods and the wealth of their country. Regions were important to daily life as they would determine peoples cultural and economic status.

The conversion of Saul of Tarsus into Paul was very significant as his beliefs and values drastically changed ultimately spreading Jesus’ teachings widely. Saul was struck by a bright light from God that blinded him and after Paul was cured by a local priest, he was determined to spread the word of Jesus. This is such a drastic change for his beliefs and values as previously he strongly believed in the Jewish religion and persecuted people for believing in Christianity. St Paul made it his mission to spread the word about Jesus’ teaching and to convert people to follow him by preaching eternal life.

Paul had three main journeys that went around the ancient Mediterranean. Paul's second journey started in Antioch to Derbe where he had success in gathering disciples and creating new coverts. After this, they passed through the regions of Phrygia and Galatia, at this point they were further than what they had explored in the first journey but the Holy Spirit urged them to continue. Paul received a vision calling him to Macedonia so they went and there he wrote the second letter to them Corinthians. They then continued to Phillipi where they cured a slave girl of her evil spirit, get thrown in prison, convert the jailer and escape from prison. From prison, they go to Thessalonica where he preaches in synagogues and converts a number of Jews. Next they visit Berea by night and escape trouble makers by fleeing to Athens. Here Paul makes a very important speech to the people at the top of Areopagus. Paul then went to Corinth where he preached about false idols with much disturbance before leaving to Ephesus. He only stayed in Ephesus for a short time then to Ceasarea, visiting their Church, then back to Antioch from where he started.

St Paul has written to many places such as Corinth and Philipi explaining to the people of that area the advantages of being Christian and preaching about Jesus’ teachings which effectively spread the word. All of his letters had reoccurring messages about Jesus’ unconditional love and praising false idols. The purpose that came through his writings were unity between communities and converting beliefs to Christianity. This can be shown in Galatians 1:15-16 through “was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles”. This shows his main messages to the people of the time and the meaning he wanted them to gather.

Paul mentions aspects of life at the time through his epistles, he also talks about some cultural challenges that he experienced such as contradictory beliefs from other religions. Paul struggled to preach Jesus’ teaching as citizens believed strongly in their original religions and would not listen to him. The religions conflicted when Christians and Jews were told to follow and praise different idols. Christianity believes that Jesus is the messiah whereas, Judaism believes that he is not a holy being. This was a challenge for Paul as he could not spread Jesus’ teachings as easily because people refused to listen.

Post 6: Interpretation of Pauls Messages to us

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).” The literal quote means that love is pure, good and unmaterialistic. Paul originally wrote this letter to the people of Corinth, who were straying away from true Christian values and were in need of advice, he reassured them of Jesus' teachings about love (Matthew 22:36-40). St Paul’s quote fundamentally teaches our modern society that love should manifest as acceptance and unity, just as he taught the original people of Corinth. As the meaning reflects the message of acceptance, this could be used to evaluate modern Christianity and how it repudiates the LGBTIQ+ community as equals. The Christian religion discriminates same sex relationships through not accepting them. Instead, St Paul would want church’s response to people in same sex relationships should mirror that of the patient and kind love given to the homeless.
