His studies on fruit flies moulded alot of the understanding we have of genetics today. He found a mutation for a white-eyed fruit fly, with which he discovered that the trait for eye colour was linked to the X chromosome and introduced the terms "sex linked" and "X linked". Going through with more experiments like this and extrapolating more mutations he was eventually able to breed double mutations (for example a short winged white eyed fruit fly) and triple mutations (for example a white eyed, yellow bodied, short winged fruit fly).
