Hans Selye shows how most things in life cause some sort of stress and to be without stress is to be dead. There are positive and negative forms of stress that have different effects on us, The effects of long term stress can be understood through a 3 stage process called the General Adaptation Syndrome.

If you were to work a t a summer camp for a month there are some stressors that come along with the job. You first have to come to grips with the new surrounding and new people. Due to the stress of the situation your body goes through stage one of GAS which pumps your body full of hormones allowing you to be super energetic to respond to the various situations required of you. Stage two begins after having been there for a week. You have normalized to the camp and yet due to the rigorous nature of the activities you develop a cold. Stage three begins afters several weeks. All the volunteers are mildly sick and a general wave of tiredness is over the staff. This third stage makes everybody snappy and bickering ensues regularly.
