Family reaches far beyond its direct effects on the child.

Families are the first agents of socialization to teach children about gender roles and expectations.

Working class parents tend to worry about their children staying out of trouble while middle class parents tend to worry about their children’s self-expression, curiosity, and self control.

Working class parents assume their children will grow up and have similar jobs to them and vice versa applies to middle class parents.

This theory does not apply to all families.

The religion agent is stronger for people who attend religious services.

Many religious values and ideas of morality have become a part of American culture, and their religious roots are no longer visible.

Religion influences people’s views on sexuality, proper gender roles, work, and child rearing practices, as well as beliefs.

Sociologists believe that religious participation also reduces the chance of divorce.

Religious beliefs and practices help us the elderly as they prepare for their own and their peers’ eventual deaths.

The socialization process in school involves more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. There is a “hidden curriculum” that teaches discipline, order, cooperation, and conformity-characteristics required for success in the adult world of work.

School teaches children how time works in the real world as getting through a preset number of activities within a given time period often becomes more important than learning.

Additionally, teachers reward children with praise and acceptance when they recite the “right” answers, behave properly, or exhibit desirable attitudes.

Young people must depend on one another for much of their social life because of the amount of time children spend in school.

The child’s peer group— composed of individuals of roughly the same age of interests— is the only agent of socialization that is not controlled primarily by adults.

Children experience conflict, competition, and cooperation in peer groups.

Children in peer groups can learn to make their own decisions and experiment in new ways of thinking.

The peer group provides an opportunity for children to develop close ties with friends outside the family, including members of the opposite sex. Children learn to get along with large numbers of people and people who are different than themselves.

Mass media includes such things as television, radio, newspaper, magazines, movies, books, and the internet.

Because of mass media children are able to see numerous aspects of their culture and other cultures.

Mass media provides children with images and ideals as achievement and success, activity and work, equality and democracy.

One con to consuming mass media as a child is that sometimes watching aggressive heavier on television increases aggression in society.

Mass media can be vessels for propaganda influence and can enhance the percent of consuming information that is one sided.
