________When you look at_____ Canada and the United States on a map of North America, _____one of the very first___________ things you _____might notice_______ is that they share a very ________long border_______ . In fact, at 5,525 miles (8,891 kilometers), it is the _____longest______ international _____border______ in the world. This fact ____alone______ is a topic ___worth________ discussion, but what makes it ______even more________ interesting is that in 1921 Canada created a ____secret plan________ for its soldiers to ___cross over________ that border and attack America! The plan was called “_____defense scheme___________ No 1” and it was created by James “Buster” Sutherland Brown, the Canadian Director of Military Operations and Intelligence. As the name of the plan ______suggests________, Canada’s _____main objective________ was for Canada to defend _______itself against_______ a possible American invasion . An American invasion of Canada? Well, only _______three years earlier__________, millions of people ____had died_________ in World War 1, and many countries were _______understandably________ concerned that more fighting was a real possibility (don’t forget – World War 2 was _______less than_________ 20 ___years away____________!). In case the United States _______began moving_______ its military closer to the Canadian border, the plan _____called for _______ Canada to ___attack first__________ and hold several big _____northern________ US cities and states (such as Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Main). Of course, _______there was no way_______ that Canada _____could keep_________ these places for very long (_____even if______ the attack was successful): in 1921 the Canadian population ______totalled_______ only 4.3 million, ____whereas_____ that of the US was 109 million – 25 times bigger! ________However_________, the objective of _______defense_______ Scheme No 1 was only to delay a possible American _____attack on_________ Canada, and if the _____expected_______ American counter-attack happened, Canadian soldiers _____would quickly________ return to Canada – and ____wait for_______ Britain to send help. Between 1921 and 1926, Brown and a ______few others_____ traveled to the US __as__spies______, but the plan was ______eventually given up__________ and destroyed by Canada in 1928. It was only two _____years later_________ (in 1930) that the US created its ___own secret ____________ plan for an invasion of Canada called “War Plan Red”!
