The link between the musician and song is inherently dictated by the core emotion of the song. According to Ratliff, the instruments, arrangements, pace and other aural objects are merely physical manifestations of the musician’s core. In chapter 18 Ratliff mentions Donald Lawerence's "Spiritual" as an example of linking. He justifies this example by commenting on how the momentum of the song mirrors the feeling of overwhelming, religious fervour. It builds and builds until that final "hallelujah." One unlikely example of "linking" can be heard in Iceage's "Against the Moon." This danish post-punk band took the lead singer's hopelessness and regret and scored it with a drunken ballad that limps its way to a crescendo.
