This would include the introduction of Greasers/Socs, Johnny's death, the rumble, etc. You can see this in The Outsiders because it states, "When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I only had two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home." ( Hinton 1 & 180) The story starts out this was in our expedition and we can also see this in the resolution. Ponyboy writes about this point in his life for his semesters theme.

On covers of Outsider books it shows the following, "Stay Gold, Ponyboy. Stay Gold." That phrase is from none other than Johney himself giving Ponyboy inspiration for the outsiders book to write to his English teacher. This saying means, keep it in your heart at all times.

After threatening the Socs, Two-bit tells Ponyboy, "...listen, don't get tough. You're not like the rest of us and don't try and be." Darry is hard on him because he doesn't want him to miss out on the opportunity that he had to give up. On page 176 is says "And he had given up a lot for Soda and me.(S.E Hinton 176)" Also on page 169 it says "I didn't do to badly in math because Darry checked over my homework in that and caught all my mistakes and made me do it again.(S.E Hinton 169)" So Darry plays a fatherly role in there lives because their real dad died in a auto wreak with their mom.

In the book, Darry is described as a father. He dropped out of school just to have money to support them, although he was only twenty. In the book, it states, “I suddenly realized that Darry was only twenty, that he wasn’t so much older that he couldn’t feel scared or hurt and as lost as the rest of us. I saw that I had expected Darry to do all the understanding without even trying to understand him. And he had given a lot up for Soda and me.” Darry cares about them, but sometimes has a hard time showing it. Darry yells at Ponyboy because he seem potential and doesn’t want him to end up like he was- able to get a scholarship but couldn’t afford it. The book supports this by stating, “Darry never had really gotten over not going to college.” This may not seem relevant, but it supports my point that Darry is trying to make Ponyboy successful.

Sunsets are presented as a defiance to stereotypes. Sunsets are something that Ponyboy has almost kept to himself in a way, but also wants other people to notice the importance of sunsets. Sunsets aren’t something you’d expect from people like Greasers, but when you do find out about the sunsets it’s presented as a breaking point of the stereotype. It it brought up in the novel a few times where the Socs have presented their own problems, and then you realize that the Socs have lives, problems that they need to deal with too. And a sunset is something that all people would love, to represent the unity, though we may be different that we are all human. All possible of experiencing sunsets, to appreciate despite all of our differences. In some ways, the sunset stands for the hope of some people, that they aren’t alone. That there are all kinds of people who watch the same sunset, ignoring everyone’s differences.

The author uses the symbolism of the sunset to represent something wholesome. We can see this in The Outsiders because it states, " Like the way you dig sunsets , Pony. That's gold. Keep that way, its a good way to be. I want you to tell Dally to look at one." This sunset that can something, just to admire. Nothing specific but something every human should have. Everyone should have a "sunset" in their life. A place where you feel you and love it. For Ponyboy, its sunsets. For Soda it could be Mickey Mouse. That's why Johnny tells Johnny to show a sunset to Dally. If that had a sunset, he could've not died. A sunset represent a place like home, love, care, and admiration.

At the end of the day when the sun sets, all that's visible is failure, problems, tragedy, but you have to accept it and move on to the next day of promise waiting for you. It is mention a lot throughout the story and when Pony yells at Cherry (S.E Hinton 129) she gets upset and he says "Can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?" In response she says "Real good." Thus making sunset provide a peaceful, happy, and safe feeling. Also in Johnny's letter to Pony he asks him to tell Dallas to look at a sunset, so Dallas can find good in the world, but Pony was to late because Dallas was shot by the police.

He enjoys watching sunsets maybe it also represents the character. Ponyboy remembers a poem including sunsets. Ponyboy says he doesn't even know what it means yet he still likes it and feels it means something. Him and johnny both have similar guesses of what the poem means. Johnny's interperatation includes family. Which brings up the important and meaningful topic of Ponyboys family. which in this chapter he is not with because he has run away.

The sunset could implicate a feeling/sense of hope or joy, the sun setting at the end of a marvelous or terrible day. They are also a symbol of not stereotyping, because anyone who wants to watch it can just take a few minutes out of their time to watch the sunset over the horizon. It puts Socs and greasers together in one category. Cherry said she never the time to watch the sunset, and later in the book Ponyboy imagines her trying to watch it while taking out the trash, her brother yelling at her, telling her to hurry up. When Johnny says “Stay gold”, he could possibly mean stay you, and don’t let anyone else change who you are or what you stand or fight for. Ponyboy is unique, but when he watches the sunset, he is like someone else.
