During their rule from 1996 to 2001, the Taliban and their allies committed massacres against Afghan civilians, denied UN food supplies to 160,000 starving civilians and conducted a policy of scorched earth, burning large areas of fertile land and destroying tens of thousands of homes. According to the United Nations, the Taliban and their allies were responsible for 76% of Afghan civilian casualties (deaths) in 2010, 80% in 2011, and 80% in 2012.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Sharia (Islamic) Law</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A religious law part of the Islamic tradition. It is derived from the religious foundations of Islam, particularly. In Arabic, the term <em>sharia</em> refers to "God's immutable (unchangeable) divine law"<br><br>Sharia law acts as a code for living that all Muslims should adhere to, including prayers, fasting and donations to the poor. It aims to help Muslims understand how they should lead every aspect of their lives according to God's wishes.<br><br>Sharia can inform every aspect of daily life for a Muslim.</div><div><br>For example, a Muslim wondering what to do if their colleagues invite them to the pub after work may turn to a Sharia scholar for advice to ensure they act within the legal framework of their religion.</div><div><br>Sharia law divides offenses into two general categories: "hadd" offenses, which are serious crimes with set penalties, and "tazir" crimes, where the punishment is left for the judge to decide. Hadd offences include theft, which can be punishable by amputating the offender's hand, and adultery, which can carry the penalty of death by stoning.<br><br>The UN has spoken out against death by stoning, saying it "constitutes torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and is thus clearly prohibited".</div><div> <br><a href="https://www.billionbibles.org/sharia/sharia-law.html">There are ongoing debates as to whether sharia is compatible with democracy, human rights, freedom of thought, women's rights, LGBT rights, and banking.</a><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Afghan Women Under Taliban Rule</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>While in power in Afghanistan, the Taliban became notorious internationally for their sexism and violence against women. Their stated motive was to create a "secure environment where the chastity and dignity of women may once again be sacrosanct (highly valuable or sacred)"<sup><br></sup><br></div><div>Afghan women were forced to wear the <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=burqa&amp;rlz=1C1ZCEB_enUS810US810&amp;oq=burqa&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i61j0l4.2285j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;safe=active&amp;ssui=on">burqa </a>at all times in public, because, according to one Taliban spokesman, "the face of a woman is a source of corruption" for men not related to them. In a systematic segregation, women were not allowed to work, they were not allowed to be educated after the age of eight, and until then were permitted only to study the <a href="https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1ZCEB_enUS810US810&amp;ei=WqDtXcjnGc7YtAWak42QCA&amp;q=qur%27an&amp;oq=qu&amp;gs_l=psy-ab.1.0.0i273j0i67l2j0l2j0i131j0j0i131j0j0i131.37319.38088..39537...0.3..0.163.292.0j2......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71.AiCqXcuDs2I&amp;safe=active&amp;ssui=on">Qur'an</a>.<sup><br></sup><br></div><div>Women seeking an education were forced to attend underground schools, where they and their teachers risked execution if caught. They were not allowed to be treated by male doctors unless accompanied by a male chaperone, which led to illnesses remaining untreated. The Taliban allowed and in some cases encouraged marriage for girls under the age of 16.
